For those of you who are interviewing this year, how much do you spend on average for travel, hotel, parking etc?

I probably spent maybe $1000. Does anybody know if it is tax deductable? It is sort of like a business trip (it sure doesn't meet my vacation definition!)

Your main travel cost will be airfare. If you get an interview date out far enough you can get relatively cheap airfare. Unfortunately I had an out-of-state interview with only 6 days notice so payed a decent chunk for airfare. Hotel will vary between $50-$100 depending on location, with some locations in downtown metro areas being $150+. If the hotel offers a shuttle you may be able to skip the rental car, and then get a cab to the school. PArking in downtown areas is usually $10-20/day. Always keep a handful one 1's to use for tips.

I'd say you're looking at $4-600/interview. Again it can vary widely depending on how long you stay, rental car vs shuttle, and how much advance notice you have in getting airfare.

This is all assuming that you actually apply to schools that you cannot get to by car.

Honestly, if I was going to go to a school in Penn, NJ, Massachussets, Upstate NY, or even as far as Virginia, I would just take the Amtrak. There are so many less hassles, you don't have to worry about getting sent to Guantanomo.

I've had one interview so far and had spent:

Airfare: $410 from Cali to Missouri (7 days notice). If I waited a day later, the ticket would have been ~$630.
Hotel: $110
Food: $30
Car rental + gas: $50

Total: $600

How much I've spent for interviews this year: Too much!

About 1800 when including flights, hotel, and misc expenses. But keep in mind, I had to fly over the Pacific Ocean each time.

I've been able to drive to all of my interviews so far and my expenses are now at $500 (mostly for hotel). Thinking of skipping the next one based on cost.
