interviewing for a rejection??

I have heard that some adcoms already know a person will be rejected just by looking at an applicant's application, but still end up interviewing them anyways. So what is the point of even interviewing them in the first place? Has anyone heard of this?

where did you hear that and for what schools or adcoms? it just seems like such a waste of time, effort, and money for both parties and they have better candidates who they actually would accept to interview. They turn down so many good ones i dont' understand which ones would actually have the time and other stuff to interview people they would reject.

I agree, why would they interview somebody they know they are going to reject when they could be spending their time looking interviewing a more worthy applicant

It's frustrating to hear, but a friend of mine works for a PHD/MD (i won't mention what school), interviews applicants and admitted to doing this.

i'd believe it. just like applicants apply to "safety schools", schools also interview "safety candidates". these people are not the schools first choice but if they don't have a full class they turn to these people. some are rejected outright, some are placed on the waitlist (most of these will turn to rejections).

With 5 interviews, there is no way that you are just a "safety" applicant! Plus, all your interviews were quite early which meant schools really took you seriously.

sorry... but i'm only being realistic about it. but like the above poster said, with 5 interviews, its not likely that you are one of the candidates that i described and if you are then i'd say thats some pretty bad luck.

I have a hard time believeing that a school will interivew someone with no desire of accepting them. I think these are tales that just get passed on between nervous applicants.


To put an applicant through all that for nothing is crazy, I refuse to believe that people can be that inconsiderate.

Im afraid I must agree. Last year i interviewed and felt that was exactly what was going on. They build a safety net of students as we build a safety net of schools to apply to. Unfortunatly, I believe this is the reality. 👎

That's how I felt at my Penn and Tufts interviews last year. They were both in early Feb. and I ended up on the perpetual "waitlist" and never got accepted.

ugh that's so awful to hear though, because it takes a lot of time, effort, and money to go on interviews. Why would the school keep interviewing and get your hopes up if in the end it's just a waitliest interview and then an eventual rejection because no one ever gets off the wailist or at least very very few do.

I wish schools would just say hey there's only waitlist spots open, I mean I'd still go with even a slight chance but someone who has been on other interviews and has acceptances probably won't and therefore will open up more room for those are are super interested, even in a waitlist spot.

when and where did you interview late last year if you don't mind sharing plz?

I am thinking most interviews after Dec 1st are for waitlisted spots...It sucks b/c I am still waiting on ONE more interview...

I got waitlisted to Penn with an interview on November...I think if a school really likes you and wants to ACCEPT you they will most likely interview you on Sept or Oct...

I agree if they REALLY want to, but what if you're not one of those ppl that they really want but just want because you're competitive but just not SUPER competitive and at the top. Schools still fill their seats with these applicants as well so when do they get picked up, because esp. for those schools that interviewed starting later in the year (like pitt seems like it only started in mid october) then for those it's not unreasonable to think that a post-dec interview is neccesarily for a waitlist right?

At this point though the interview invities seem to be for feb and on which isn't the best position but there has to be some schools like BU that still have tons of seats left. right? i hope so, i reaaallyyy hope so!! It's bad enough waiting for late interviews but now realizing that even late interviews are really rejections or waitlist positions in disguise is awful. 😕

During my Louisville interview, I had lunch with a D2. He told me that his interview was late - sometime around late Jan. and he was accepted just 1 week after his interview.

that's great! talk about a quick turn around time for the decision too! 1 week is fast!
