Just wanted to mention that Scheie is definitely not a "lost cause" for non-Penn students. They are definitely looking for great students from elsewhere, I think the Penn students just always rank it very highly. It's a great program with a fantastic PD!
I currently have a November 20th spot at Oklahoma. Does anybody have an alternate date that would be willing to switch with me?
If I can't find someone to switch with me....it's tufts vs. oklahoma..Any advice ???? 😕
Hey Scubasea,
I'd definitely go with Oklahoma: better surgical numbers, better residency atmosphere, attendings very easy to get along with (and residents, too), elective experience in China, in the top 10 in NIH funding.
I interviewed at both and have to say I'm the type of person who goes by feeling, but also Tufts gets a lot of their surgical numbers in New Mexico, which UW Madison used to do and is now on probabtion, partially for that.
Don't get me wrong, I used to live in Boston and it is a great city, but when it comes to the training and residency experience you'll get, it's my impression there is no comparison. But bear in mind I'm a transitional resident going to Oklahoma for residency AND I'm post-call (so I hope this makes sense).

Yes, the PD at Penn has made it a point to create a program that has a 'family' type feeling.
Yes, the PD at Penn has made it a point to create a program that has a 'family' type feeling. He also spends a lot of time thinking about how to teach/evaluate residents. Last year was kind of abnormal because two of the students that were applying were children of ophtho faculty at Penn. Also, there were like 13 Penn med students applying to ophtho that year.
did those 2 kids of penn ophtho faculty match there? if so, how can they do that? besides the flat-out nepotism, how can you expect to get an objective critique of your operating skills when it's your mom or dad training you?

I can tell you that it's a tough decision when applying. I had that problem. My dad is at Utah. I interviewed there, and I was really torn about it, because I really like their program, but I ended up ranking them in the middle of my list. I didn't want to go in with having to deal with feeling I got in because of nepotism. I wanted to feel like whatever I was doing, I was doing it based on my application, not my name. If I had gone there, I'm confident that he would have been more critical of me than other residents.
Two of the current residents at Kresge are the progeny of one of the faculty.

Glad I checked my email early, those BP dates are going to roll fast. Funny how the same people are at these interviews. I must say it's been fun meeting a lot of you...ophtho attracts a good bunch of people.
Couples matching with ophtho is depressing. Seems like every good interview I get my g-friend gets rejected and vice-versa 😡

I like how i get the out-of-office voicemail trying to call back BPEI. That's helpful for scheduling.
UCLA e-mail: 11/29 (9am-7:45pm), 12/6 (9am-6:30pm), 12/13 (9-7:45pm)

Same here...tried email, and got an auto-reply saying she will not be back until Wed. 👎
it seems like everyone on this forum is going to interview at BP....except me 🙁
haha cheer up Papoose, I'm not going there either...we need to celebrate our mediocrity!

I'll be red-eyeing it from UCSF to Miami for the interview on the 15th because the 13th filled up.
Do they have showers in airports somewhere?

A lot of factors go into the decision-making process for deciding which programs to interview at. Proximity to family, strength of the program,
feel of the program etc all went into my decision making process a few
years back. I might be a bit biased having done my fellowship at BPEI
but I have to say BPEI residency is the best one that I've
seen. In terms of surgical numbers including lasers and the breadth
of the surgery, I thought my residency was tops but I think BPEI
is just a bit better. Also, the PD there, Dr. Gedde, is top-notch. He
is a real advocate for the residents and all-around just a very
nice person.
Just my thoughts...
I called wills today since an eariler post mentioned nov7 for their date. They told me that all applicants would be notified at the beginning of next week. They are the last program that I haven't heard from so now at least I can stop checking my email q1-2hrs!

Finally, my dry spell is broken!!!

Has anyone heard from UIC? how about NY programs other than NEEI?
Yes, UIC has given out a bunch of interviews already (Nov. 3rd, Nov 17th). However, when I interviewed there on Nov. 3rd, we had a long talk with the secretary and she said that they are offering 6 interview days this year (60 applicants overall, 10 each day), and they have not given all of them out yet. She was very upset about the whole SF match screw-up and she said it's made things very hard this year in terms of scheduling. you may want to try emailing the chairman (D. Azar) saying you're very interested--he's a great guy and it seems like it works!

Has anyone heard from GWU or Scott & White yet? Thanks.
I know Scott & White has started offering interviews (actually I think they did a while back) but I don't know if they are done or not, I would imagine they are though. No idea on GWU, sorry.

Just heard from UT-Houston by phone. Offered the wonderfully convenient dates of Dec. 1 and 2. The lady on the phone sounded like the "I'm booked that weekend" response was all she was hearing this morning.
I discovered yesterday that a program I was very interested in did not have my application!!! Unbelievable!
As recommended by others, I emailed all the programs I haven't heard anything from (since no one is answering the phone). So far...one invite and one rejection.

Whats the name of the program?
West Virginia by email. 12/8 is the only day
A great clinical problem, you will work hard for 3 years but will come out knowing how to manage everything. They take 7/ year. Residents rotate through 7 hospitals btwn Brooklyn and Staten Island. Some spectacular faculty members including the PD who is an oculoplastics specialist. They include a research afternoon once a week in the program as all resident must participate in research and complete a project. The current chairman is an interim chair, but the residents appear to be quite pleased with him as he is resident friendly. The residents will tell you if you don't want to work hard starting from day one don't come here. Residents get the fellowships that they want.
