Interviews not going well... please help

  1. In my rejection email, VCOM said that I was lacking sufficient clinical experience and DO shadowing experience..
I can almost guarantee you that is bull****. I had like 30 hours DO shadowing and like 600 less clinical volunteer hours than you and I got accepted somewhere. I also don't have any research experience like you. You did have the DO you shadowed write a recommendation letter right?
Seriously they want more than 50 shadowing hours and 700 clinical hours? Lol.

Which makes me think they are just saying that and actually rejected me from some other reason... I wish they'd just be honest though! And yes, I had the DO I shadowed write me a recommendation letter.

Hi everyone,

I'm feeling kind of nervous/confused right now.. any help with any or all of the questions below would be greatly appreciated!

Some background:

I'm a current applicant--applied only to DO schools, first time applicant, PA resident, 506 MCAT, 3.5 GPA, 700 hours of clinical volunteering, 50 hours of shadowing a DO, lots of clinical research experience, lots of leadership experience, currently working full time in clinical research.

I have several C’s and D’s on my undergraduate transcript but I completed a year of informal postbacc classes. I retook the several classes I did poorly in and received A’s the second time. I also took more science courses to boost my bcpm gpa. Submitted primaries in August and secondaries in Sept-Oct.

Attended 5 interviews so far (VCOM VA, LECOM-B, ARCOM, KYCOM, UNECOM) and am scheduled to attend 6 more (CUSOM, ACOM, UIWSOM, WCUCOM, PCOM PA, TUNCOM). While I am grateful to have these interviews, I feel like they’re not going too great... I've heard back from VCOM VA and LECOM B but haven't heard back from ARCOM, KYCOM, or UNECOM yet.

Questions/Concerns:
  1. VCOM VA was my first interview and I was rejected. I know my interview wasn't great... I was super nervous, stumbled on my words, didn't give great responses overall, and was also feeling sick all day. In my rejection email, VCOM said that I was lacking sufficient clinical experience and DO shadowing experience. I can understand that I don't have many DO shadowing hours but I feel like I have plenty of clinical volunteering experience. Do you think this might not be the real reason they rejected me? I realize my GPA is bit lower than their average.

  2. I interviewed at LECOM B and was waitlisted. I feel like I did well during my interview but when I called to inquire, I was told that the fact that I received a C or D almost every semester during my undergrad concerned the admissions committee. I’m not taking any classes now but am considering taking a few in the spring. I will be writing a letter of intent as I am very interested in this school and PBL. What would you recommend that I mention in this letter? What kind of chance do I have to get accepted off the waitlist?

  3. I made a dumb mistake while writing a thank you email to one of my interviewers. I was interviewed by two people simultaneously and wanted to send the same email individually to both people. I wrote “Dear Dr. X” as the header but sent that email to Student Y. I sent Dr. X the correct email but Student Y was addressed by the wrong name. I noticed and corrected this right away and apologized. Definitely feeling stupid for being careless… Do you think this is something to worry about?

  4. I am also a little surprised that I received an interview from LECOM B but not LECOM Erie, in which I am SUPER interested, since I am a PA resident. I put Seton Hill as my first choice. Do you think there is any reason I have heard from FL but not PA? Could I send an email to LECOM E expressing how much I’d love to go to their school? Same situation with NYCOM and Rowan… haven’t heard anything. Should I email them? What do I say?

  5. If I ever get into LECOM B, is it possible to transfer to LECOM E or Seton Hill? Has anyone heard of this being done?

  6. My top choice is PCOM PA. I was scheduled for an interview for 12/19 but I will be leaving the country the day before and returning early January. PCOM said they didn’t have any cancellations before 12/19 so they can’t get me in any earlier and the earliest they have is some time in January.. They have nothing between 12/19 and 1/1. Is January too late to interview at PCOM? Do you think schools do any interviews between 12/19 and 1/1 in general? I REALLYYY want to have the best shot at PCOM. Please let me know if you have any tips!

  7. I submitted my primary to Touro NY in August but JUST got a secondary like a week ago (I have no idea why so late). I am very interested in the school primarily due to location (Middletown), but should I even bother submitting the secondary at this point? Some concerns I have: 1) The fee is $200. 2) It’s pretty late to be submitting a secondary now, right? 3) My GPA and MCAT are below their averages. Money isn’t a huge factor but I’d prefer to save it if I have no shot at this school at this time. What should I do?

  8. I have two secondaries that I pretty much just neglected to fill out since I was swamped with work. Should I bother applying to Touro CA or ATSU SOMA at this point? I would certainly consider going to either school but I just don’t know if I should spend the time and money this late in the cycle to apply.
So so sorry for the long post!! Any advice on any or all questions would be incredibly appreciated! Thanks so much!

Listen. Take a deep breath. There is nothing to worry about right now, you have a ridiculous number of interviews. Your chances are high.

1. Yes, I agree with the other poster, they probably arent telling you the real reason, it sounds like you have problems with the actual interview. Learn from it and move on. Relax. Don't be nervous, they already like you for one reason or another.

2. I'll let someone else cover the letter of intent, but it's still relatively early to be on a waitlist, there will be movement especially with a school like LECOM. Relax. Prep for the rest of your interviews.

3. If this was something to worry about, there would be fewer doctors. Relax. It happens quite often.

4. Different schools look at different applications at different times and choose different people. Relax. I highly doubt sending an extra letter is going to help any. Other schools have longer cycles, Rowan has in-state bias. You will get a response when they send you a response.

5. They are different schools. This typically does not happen.

6. You are not interviewing for a waitlist in January. Relax. You go and do the best you can. Prep for your interviews.

7. I applied and got into Touro Middletown. They just accepted their first batch of interviews a week or two ago, and they've only had three interview sessions I believe. They are taking their time with decisions and sending secondaries. Relax. The fee is $200 for two campuses, so it evens out. If you dont apply to the school, it is an automatic rejection, remember that. You might want to visit the school-specific forum.

8. Again, if you dont apply to the school, it is an automatic rejection. I would visit the school-specific forums.

The biggest thing is you have 11 interviews. If you attend all 11, then get rejected everywhere, then you can say your interviews are not going well. But for now, practice, do well, and you are bound to get in somewhere. Look at your options after you get accepted. The application cycle is a crapshoot, you have no reason to worry right now.

Just because you got accepted elsewhere with less clinical hours doesn't make this BS. VCCOM emphasizes clinical experience and from the looks of it they emphasize it more than the were accepted into.

Where were you accepted?

Edit: I see why, you were accepted into NYIT-COM. Good luck

You really think Virginia residents with his stats also have over 700 clinical hours before getting accepted there? I find that hard to believe. But if you say so then sure

and is that a jab at NYITCOM? Please enlighten me as to why its so much worse than VCOM.

You will most likely not hear from NYCOM or Rowan. They both have strong in-state preference. I've read that NYCOM took literally ONE out of state student last year, and I know that for Rowan, you usually need ridiculously high stats to be considered if you're out of state.

You should be doing interview prep with anyone you can get to spare you a few minutes. A friend, a classmate, anything. Have CONVINCING answers to the big 3: why medicine, why DO, why this school, but obviously you should have convincing answers to lots of other questions, too. Especially since you're traveling around, schools will want a damn good answer to why you'd consider uprooting your life to move to a place you have no roots.

Hey OP, this may be true, but I still got into Rowan as NY resident. My stats wasnt super high. just have hope and patiently wait! i would make sure your files are complete tho... just double check if everything is sent in and received. but best of luck! never give up

thanks for the replies, everyone--they were SUPER helpful! I will definitely focus on interview prep a LOT more than I have before and I'm definitely learning along the way.

Idk if you guys gave me good luck or something, but I was just accepted to KYCOM yesterday evening!! thank godddddd 🙂

Really surprised you didnt put in an app into WVSOM, considering its part of the Appalaichain mountain range area and that they do get quite a number of students from PA. You seem to fit their stats nicely. Give it a consideration.

@radian313 I did apply to WVSOM but submitted my secondary there only recently (1 week ago). I wish I had submitted it earlier but I was sooo swamped. Do you think submitting this late to WVSOM is too late? Any chance I could still get an interview? Definitely interested in the school!

Oh ok. I thought you didnt. Well they tend to slow down the holiday season, as does every school. Plus they are pretty busy doing interviews after Thanksgiving. Their classes fill up by January-ish into Feb. You might get a Feb interview (best case), and it might be for a alternate list. They def. stop interviewing I believe in March. Is it late? Sort of yes, but are you completely out of the game? No. You have good stats. But be prepped for a late interview (possibly) and for a alternate list. I am assuming a lot here, but I have my fingers crossed for you.

And yes, its a great school, it is indeed a diamond in the mountains.

Sounds like someone needs since propranolol and a Xanax.

1: It's your interview and GPA most likely.

2: Letters of intent are meaningless garbage. Why? Well, let's look at you. You're going to write this letter telling them how bad you want to go there even though they aren't your first choice. This is why LoIs generally can harm you but not help- they're not taken seriously but you can make a mistake.

3: Thank you letters go directly in the garbage, usually, and get you zero points unless you screw them up, in which case you'll get many negative points. You screwed up, but they might let it slide.

4: Erie tends to send out interview invited at a slower pace than Bradenton. NYCOM and Rowan have heavy in-state board though, you'll probably never hear from them.

5: No.

6: Reschedule your flight if you want the best shot at PCOM. Otherwise, with your rather lackluster academic history and late interview, you'll probably waitlist at best.

7: They interview and accept a massive number of students so they can milk the several thousand dollar deposits that people give up as other schools accept them. You'll probably get an II, but might not.

8: Go ahead and send them. You still stand a shot of an II, don't worry about it.

Now chill out and stop being so neurotic, it's bad for your health.

If you haven't done so already, go read my post on guide to interviews. Also remember that people are terrible judges of thier own interview performance. But here you probably just bombed the interview.

Uneven performance throughout all four years is a valid concern for Adcoms. There is no way of telling what chance you have of getting off the WL, because you don't know where you are on the list, nor who's ahead of you. A LOI will be treated as a lie. Period. How would YOU interpret a nonbinding contract from a desperate applicant??
  1. I interviewed at LECOM B and was waitlisted. No. Most letter writers are oblivious to the fact that your fate was determined by the interviewers withing 30 mins of the end of the interview.
  1. I made a dumb mistake while writing a thank you email to one of my interviewers. I was interviewed by two people simultaneously and wanted to send the same email individually to both people. Two different schools, as different as CCOM and MUCOM or TUNCOM. Emailing them just shows that you're desperate, needy special snowflake. Don't do it. They know you're interested in them because you sent them an app.

Transfers between med schools are rare
  1. If I ever get into LECOM B, is it possible to transfer to LECOM E or Seton Hill? Has anyone heard of this being done?
Nope. Marchis the time schools start getting fussy about their interviewees.

Because it took them this long to work their way down the pile to your app. IIs aren't given out in temporal order of receipt of apps. I have a low opinion of Touro-NY, so suggest skipping them.

Yes, but hurry!!!

I mean, it happens. I just wouldn't count on it. Rowan isn't the kind of school you should expect to get an interview at if you're OOS, but most people in-state with halfway decent stats will get an interview.

Everybody thinks they are a good interviewer but the fact is most of us premeds are really bad.

You could be not as energetic and give a meh attitude about the the school. That was one of my several problems during my first three interviews. Be excited to be there and excited about potentially going to the school!

Try preparing with a friend or record yourself with a webcam while answering common interview questions. Your tone and delivery can play a big factor.

Find your weakness. Maybe you aren't explaining your motivation to medicine, red/yellow flags, ECs properly.

The cycle is far from over for you and you should improve for your next chance.

Have your application memorized perfectly, know the details (when, who, what, how) behind your ECs.

Theres a good chance you could get at least one more interview this application cycle. START PREPARING NOW!

At least you can get interviews. PCOM is one of my top choices...and I don't even get interviews from them.

Also, @Zinc14 I'd be happy to do mock interviews with you 🙂

thanks everyone! I really appreciate all the tips!! sorry I sounded so neurotic.. definitely calmed down a bit since then.

LOL strongly concur. Usually it's something like:

4.0 c&sGPA 522 MCAT 13 interviews do u think I'll get in?!?!

Sent from my iPhone using SDN mobile
Drives me nuts. It was part of the reason why I stopped coming on here.

Or "OMGZ I got a C, iz I not going to be dokter!?!?111?!?"

No need to apologize, everyone around this time is usually stressed out and worried about their application. I know I definitely am.
