Hi all,

I just got my first interview invite and I'm happy but also nervous. I never got this far before on my previous application haha. I was just wondering where some good resources are for reading and preparing for interviews. I am going to start sifting through the interview threads soon to see what I have to wear and all that. Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

I've read through most of this book, and found that much of what was included in it has been informative. Good luck with your interviews!

Thank you for all the info so far! I'll take a look at everything everyone's got!

How early do you guys usually fly out for interviews? I want to be safe but then again it costs more money and time to go there earlier. So let's say you have one thursday morning, you live on the west coast and you get a flight going out on Wednesday morning. Should that be ok?

I feel that as long as you get to your host's place or hotel before 10PM the day before the interview, it's fine. I would never fly out the day of the interview even if it starts in the afternoon because I've had way too many experiences with flights getting delayed 3+ hours.

Yea I thought the day before should be fine too. Hopefully no disaster strikes. Also, these flights and costs are so expensive :/ are you guys flying southwest

I'm flying Spirit Airlines. I flew through them once and it was a terrible experience, but their flights are $100-$200 than their competition.

I have mostly flown Southwest so far. No issues really, just keep in mind that their planes do not have anywhere to hang a garment bag. So if you're like me and not checking any luggage, then you'll have to store it in the overhead bins. I laid it on top of other people's luggage, didn't have any issues!

Is it worth it to pay for an interview coach?
I'm non-traditional so I can't utilize my undergraduate health advisor or career resources at school

Yeah. I'm planning on wearing my suit on the plane and just taking a change of clothes/toiletries in a backpack to avoid their terrible fees.

As long as the flight is short, then I think it is fine to wear a suit. However, if it is a long flight, such as traveling from the west coast to east coast, then you should either get a garment bag or put the suit in a hand carried bag (find a video on folding a suit and put the suit in a giant plastic ziplock bag). The potential for the suit to be stained would be far greater in this instance.

Thanks I'll look into folding a suit into a bag. I was thinking about that, but I didn't want it to get wrinkled.

Here is a video that some of the SDNers here have really liked. I tried to fold it the way he showed, but had a hard time with the shoulder area of my suit (it may work for you so give it a shot). So I had to use another technique. However, I still used the plastic bag just like the man does here. As for the wrinkling, it is very minimal. Just hang your suit on the door inside the shower room of your hotel and then just leave the shower on (as hot as possible). It works just like magic even on the heavy wrinkles. Good luck!
