very tacky
Im a 4th year who conducts interviews (san antonio has one student and one faculty interview, 1/2 hour each - and an on the spot essay at the end of the day about what your impressions are)
what i look for:
first i barely read the file ahead of time except for the personal statement.
i dont give a crap what your grades are, if you got an interview then they are good enough. then i watch mannerisms a lot when i talk to an applicant. i look for a relaxed and comfortable person, uptight types dont do well at our school. i also pay close attention to the questions they ask. most people i recommend ask something interesting. i ask if they have ever seen any type of oral or perio surgery and how they felt about a lot of blood, etc. i ask what class(es) in college have made you feel ready to get through a tough didactic schedule - and why? i ask them what their plans are beyond dentistry. meaning their personal life goals. if they have to think too long about that one, i usually have to say thumbs down. we look for strong and dedicated people who are able to balance pressure with having a normal life. i wish you luck in your pursuit of a first year spot. the rewards are already great for me and the best is yet to come
