Whats up 4th year EM buddies. Ok, by now some of us have submitted apps and waiting on LoRs and such. Question is, when do programs "usually" begin to offer interviews? Should we expect some offers as early as the end of September? or not until October? Can some of the interns/residents/PDs chime in. Thanks and good luck to everyone.

You'll maybe get a few at the end of October, but most will start coming in around early to mid November. It's all program dependant, so don't start spasing out if you don't have an interview by the first week of November. Many programs wait until the Dean's letter is released before they offer interviews.

yeah i think most start early november/mid november. Sometimes I think your home program may have a 'mock' interview type thing that could count as the real one in late october. UAB did this to help the med students get some 'practice' in as well as count as their interview for the application. And the interviews extend up to even almost mid february, because people will accept invitations and may cancel throughout the season.

no interviews yet! 🙁
I know it's way early, but still, my ADD's acting up.

I actually already got an interview offer from a back up program (not EMED). 😕 😕 😕 ALL my LOR's were EMED but I still got this interview so soon.

bah. I am starting to twitch.

confesison: I am a clinic hater. And the thought of going to clinic tomorrow is making me itchy and rashy!!

No interviews yet...not really expecting any for some time yet..

Seems like some of the other specialties (IM, FM) have gotten a few...
Nevertheless, those reports are making me check my email every 10 mins!

No offense...but relax. It's only been a few days. It's going to be a LONG interview season if you keep checking your email every 10 minutes already...

Oh shiznet! I have no interview invites yet!!! Oh wait a second....maybe it's because...oh that's right...I haven't submitted yet. Relax guys...interviews will flood in eventually. Let the PD's get organized and all that good stuff. Have faith in your apps. I'm sure you will all do great. 😉

I already have 5 EM interviews, one a Denver and another at Highland! Yeah, and I haven't even submitted my application yet. Sike! Dudes making me sweat about getting my app in. Geeze, do we really have to start the paranoia already?

ohh! gotta run --I gotta go drill some burr holes and place an IABP, while levitating!

RELAX. (next to impossible, but try)
It's HIGHLY program dependent when interviews go out. Some seem to use numerical cutoffs and send out invitations a few days after receiving the application, before dean's letters or LORs.

Some programs review applications until mid-Nov before sending out ANY invitations. My program has 6 to 8 faculty review each application and rate it on a numerical score weighing like 10 factors. When all of this is done, the faculty meet to compile scores and discuss individual applications. Invitations usually do not go out until November. You should see the HUGE piles of paperwork lying around all of the program secretaries' offices around the country right now.

Also depends on the sheer numbers of applications that a program receives and needs to review.

One thing that I did that I think was helpful during the interview process was not to obsess on forums and websites such as this one. Tend to promote anxiety more than anything else. Check in once a week or so for advice or updates on other's interview experience. It can be a stressful process and some are better at handling it than others. What you SHOULD be doing is having the most fun that you can during the 4th year of medical school.
Best of luck,
-THenry
