Hey everyone!

I'm not sure if this question has been asked before. but I've been looking on a lot of "school-specific" threads and a lot of people are saying things like "I was verified 7/17- I guess I have no hope if I don't have an interview now"

I was just wondering- from the perspective of current med school students. If you aren't in the first batch of interviews- is that it for you? Is there no possibility of getting an interview from that school?

I find this a little hard to believe since interviews do run till march in some school but I'm getting a little discouraged with what other people are saying in these forums.

Thanksss!

It depends. It really does matter at rolling schools, but not necessarily as much at all of them.

Also matters if it is your rolling state school, and you are reading that tons of people have already interviewed or have interviews lined up into November.

YES! This is exactly my question. Do adcoms really re-review as the months go by? I just need to know this.

haha- yea- it's rather disconcerting if all your friends have interviews at a school but you don't

bump. there was no real answer and I really want to know.

As you know, many schools interview into next March and April. Therefore, some people will be getting invites later than others. Just because you don't have an invite in mid-September doesn't mean you won't get one later. Applicants who were complete in August still get invites mid-winter. Be patient.

Some ppl are anxious and want to share their anxiety with others who can relate. It can be a good stress reliever but you definitely should NOT let it get to you. Since we know that interviews run into March, then it's clear that the process has only begun. As long as you have not been rejected yet, you're still in the running as AdComs will continue to review applications for many more months to come. I have friends in med school right now who didn't get any invites until January. Really, all it takes is one yes anyways. :luck:

I suppose I read this to mean something a little different: if you were verified earlier, completed earlier, and you still haven't gotten an interview, then yes, worry. However, if your materials have just recently been put in review, then remain calm because you still have time.

Is my interpretation accurate?

They were asking if the adcoms REREVIEW so no thats not what they were wondering about. I'm curious about this myself.

Think of a funnel full of pebbles. We received most of the applications early in the cycle and we are going through them one by one. There is a huge backlog and it is likely that it will take weeks and weeks for the folks who submitted early (supplementals in July/August) to be reviewed and queued for interview. Meanwhile, more and more pour in.

Schools are loath to offer interview invitations too far into the future because there is too much opportunity for cancellations, rescheduling, etc. Far easier to make the offer for 2-6 weeks into the future. So, you may be reviewed, recommended for interview, and just waiting for the next block of dates to open up. Alternately, you've been reviewed and you are a good but not excellent candidate. So it is like a party with A list and a B list. If you are on the B list, your invitation will go out a little later but it will go out. Sometimes the B list is pretty long and rather than dumping applicants early, the adcom/admissions office leaves the applicant on the B list with the hope that interview slots wil be available later in the cycle.

Somewhat reassuring... even though I think I'm the B list party member at some of these schools. Thanks 👍

Thank you so much for your response LizzyM!

I'm much more heartened now- I'm fine with being on those B lists!

LizzyM,

In general, can average applicants who submit secondaries right now still make it on the "A" or "B" list without a significant disadvantage?

Thanks!

Many schools have already begun to interivew, or invite for interviews, so there are fewer interview slots available now than there were 6 weeks ago. However, the season is young and there are still many interview invitations to be issued so I'd say that there is not too much disadvantage but, on the other hand, so many applicants submit secondaries in August (at least at my school) that September secondary writers tend to be interviewed in the last weeks of the season. So, you could make the A list but for a slot in Jan-April 2010. (in other words, consider yourself very lucky if you have an interivew invite before Christmas).

LizzyM is at a non-rolling school, so when you interview should not matter at those schools.

At rolling admissions schools, however, if you are not interviewing until after Christmas, your chances have undoubtedly been hurt for admission compared to what your chances would have been if you had applied in the June - August timeframe.

I'm not so sure about that. A school doesn't know until May 15 who will attend (the deposits are so small they mean nothing) and most, I think, issue offers of admission with the knowledge that there is a chance that a "must have" applicant will come down the pike late in the season (unlikely but it can happen). Therefore a few straight-out offers might be held back for late but for the most part the people being interviewed late in the season are B list and are most likely headed for the waitlist (at rollilng schools) Do keep in mind that some schools will fill a large proportion of the class with applicants from the waitlist in some years (and not so much in other years).

Do yourself a favor and just relax. There's plenty of time left. It's hard to be patient, but you gotta do it.
