I'm currently taking 5-6 hours on my essays for secondaries, which I find to be way to long considering I have 284347373 to do. It's probably because I try to incorporate a catchy intro, a conclusion, and flowery language - basically a well-developed essay. Am I doing too much or is this what I should be doing? Anybody did what I did or the complete opposite and how did you do as far as getting interviews?

I dunno if flowery is ever the way to go. But yes, I'm also trying to treat these essays as formal documents which deserve attention and thoughtful effort.

you might be able to recycle some of them - changing them slightly to make them specific to each school's essay question. there's nothing wrong with this, as long as it's not obvious. at least then you won't have to write a new one for each secondary.

are they worth that much? there are probably a few key points they look for and some red flags to avoid, but other than that i dont know if eloquent prose will make the difference between harvard vs podunk med. you might be better off getting them out early instead. since they usually have length limits (even if not, the readers have attention limits), every instance of flowers is that much less substance. but hey, im an engineer, go figure. AND i screwed up mcat writing. but i did AP out of college english!

edit: in my mind there are few facets of the app process itself that can vault you to superstardom (besides credentials or numbers that you have already accumulated and that are not subject to change), but there are many parts that can damn you. maybe if you can concoct tales that will have adcoms' heads spin, but how likely is that even if you put your all into it? not to undermine your writing ability, but i mean that each reader will have his own criteria that will make his head spin. so making lots of heads spin might be tricky. ok enough

How much time a day do you spend on sdn not to mention typing and editing (and maybe re-editing) your posts?

Beeee yourself. Admissions committee members have thousands of essays to trudge through and I don't know about you but nothing puts me to sleep faster than an essay full of "flowery" language. Try to let your distinct personality shine through in your essays, show the committee you're different than the other 6000 applicants.

search function down so...how important are secondaries? can i just be very brief and direct with my answers and blitz through them?

Doctors prefer information straight and to the point. They are busy people. Reviewing applications is probably on the low end of their priority scale. I think flowery language would tend to piss them off, unless your reviewer was Richard Selzer. This is a med school application, not an essay contest. Considering doctors often have to condense large amounts of information into short points--answering telehealth massages, writing in patient charts, reviewing journal aricles, etc--demonstrating you're ability to write concisely and cohesively is important.

How do you know doctors are reading your application? I'm sure it's not all clinicians ;-)

I get the impression that mostly junior faculty members in IM, family med, and peds tend to have the most involvement with selecting medical students. Specialists and senior faculty usually reserve their time for residents and fellows. They tend to be a lot busier than clinicians, so most of them don't get involved in the admissions process.

thanks for all the help guys... i got some very useful tips that i'm sure to incorporate into my essays...

just remember: a picture is worth 1000 words

Just to gie my opinion, I spend tiem considerable to the amount I spent on my personal statement on each essay. I figure, this is your last effort to show something abou tyourself, and it makes up for my weak verbal score.
