Hello,

I've been "lurking" around SDN for a few weeks now, and am happy to have joined today.

I'm a 28 year old mother of 2 who has made the decision to prepare for med school! Becoming a doctor has always been my dream, but my life choices (getting married at 18 for starters . . .) took my career path in another direction.

My "cousin" (not really a relative) inspired me to go for it. He's a 4th year DO student at PCSOM. He was a career changer too- at 33 he left his high-paying job (after obtaining a PhD in his field) to pursue his passion for medicine!

I'm currently a counselor, and while I love helping people with their emotional problems, my passion has always been medicine and the sciences.

I'm interested in a DO program, because the philosophy of DOs is to treat the person as a whole, in addition to the presenting symptoms. I believe I can combine my counseling skills with the art of healing as a DO.

I have a B.A. in Psychology (GPA 3.6) and an M.Ed. in Counseling (GPA 4.0).

I have to go back to school to finish up my prereqs, and then I'll be working on preparing for the MCAT! Wish me luck! :luck:

I have 2 beautiful daughters who keep me busy, and a helpful husband who is very supportive!

See you all in the DO threads!

Welcome and good luck with those prereqs:luck: Quick question: Im confused about the name you chose? Did you consider optometry before?

It's late over here in Florida, and I have no idea why I typed OD instead of DO. AAAAHHHH! I'll have to re-do my account now.

How embarrassing!

Its ok, you probably dont have to redo you account. Just make your title underneath your name as an explanation.

Well, I was able to get a similar user ID, so I won't have to confuse myself or others. Thanks for the heads-up!

Good luck. I was 28 when I decided to go for it (five years ago), and I just got my first acceptance about two months ago. You can do it if you really want to. You might get others trying to discourage you because of your age, but don't let them.

i did it before to my past name and spelled my first name wrong LOL...it happens.
Next time (if there is going to be next time LOL) just try to get hold of DRmom (our MOD) or NATE....they might be able to help you with the screen name change.

ANd welcome to the forums.
WIth these numbers all you need to do is rock your pre-reqs and do ok on MCAT.
I think it also looks like you have some awsome EC...
Good luck 🙂:luck:

I hope your dreams come to pass. I am also 28, have a wife, but no children, just 2 small dogs. I decided to pursue med school when I finished grad school. I can relate to wanting to pursue your passion. Much success to you, and just remember to take it one step at a time. If it's meant to be, it will be (cliche, but true)🙂 I am currently waiting on interviews, and hopefully an acceptance to LECOM-Erie.

Welcome and good luck to you! I'm in a similar situation, married at 19, 3 kids, and currently 27 years old. Don't let anyone tell you your too old, I've found that simply isn't true and there are many of us in the same age range. As far as applying, you have a solid background, just focus on your prereqs, rock the MCAT, and keep your goals in view. Work hard and it will pay off!
