I will be doing a 6 week rotation at an Anesthesiology program this summer between my first and second year. Can anyone recommend a book for me to read that might explain the basics of anesthesia, the history, and maybe some common cases that anesthesiologists take on? A book that will give me some knowledge that will prevent me from looking like an idiot will be great! (Please don't recommend the 1000 page, $300 complete review of anesthesiology. I am still in school, so I will only have a little time to read.) Thanks in advance.

Basics of Anesthesia by Stoelting/Miller aka "Baby Miller" will suffice for your purposes. I don't think it has much about anesthesia history, but that's not really necessary for a rotation.

And for those of you who are still medical students and anesthesia gung-ho, I was advised NOT to invest in much more than this book until you actually match into residency. If you really want something more in depth, Clinical Anesthesia Procedures of Mass General is a nice paperback pocketsize book to carry with you.

I am SO glad I didn't buy many more books because these 2 were plenty for all my rotations. Now that I've matched....I can buy as many books as I want without worrying that I'm wasting money.

I have a current version of the NMS clinical Manual of Anesthesiology. It is perfect for med students. The book explains the basics of anesthesia. If anybody's interested, let me know.

I heard the "Clinical Anesthesiology" book in the Lange series was better than baby Miller, anybody want to weigh in on that assessment?

I personally think the Lange clinical anesthesiology book is much better than Baby Miller, but is probably way too long for a med school rotation (Lange is almost 1000 pages vs. baby miller which I think is under 300).

I used Baby Miller during my 1st rotation and it was definitely good enough! There are a lot of residencies that give out baby miller as their introductory text as well.

I got Clinical Anesthesiology and I can tell you that its a very good book, with a lot of explanations about basic anesthesia and related procedures, good physiology and pharmacology stuff all anesthesia related and written in a very clear and clinical oriented way. At the end of each chapater has questions with explanation.I used it extensively during my student rotation in anesthesiology and it was really helpful.Go to your near bookstore and browse around the pages to see if you like it or to your med library.
