School 1: Iowa
OOS
Pros:
  • Very close to my family who I do not get to see much
  • Loved the facilities, students, and faculty
Cons:
  • Not cheap
School 2: UMN
IS
Pros:
  • Close to friends
  • Love the area
  • Lived in twin cities for ~8 years now
  • Have had good experiences with admissions staff and faculty
Cons:
  • Students at interview didn't seem excited to be there
Summary: I had a better interview experience and impression at Iowa. I grew up in the area, but moved away 8 years ago. Family would be very close by. The school is expensive though, and I consider Minneapolis more of my "home" at this point. Had mixed feelings at UMN interview. Some students said they loved it, but other students straight up told us they didn't enjoy being there which left me with mixed impressions of the school. Curious to hear other thoughts. I do have an interest in specializing in the future, but I don't think that makes a difference between these two schools?

no brainer
IS school...

As someone who graduated not that long ago, I am so thankful I chose my state school even though it was in a less desirable location. It saved me years of loan payments. Congrats on getting into your state school. Now make the wise decision and attend it.

My sister is at Iowa and she really likes it, but it is a pretty brutal program. That being said, I would choose minnesota. For me, the place I am makes a huge difference in how much I enjoy my life. I spent four years in a city I hated and I think it really set me back as a person. The city is a huge part of my decision and I say go where your heart is. Dental school is four long years, and I wouldn't want to spend my single weekend off in a place I don't like to be.
