Hey all! I am (or shall I say was?) working towards Intellectual Property law, but honestly I want to go into medicine(my dream). Are my stats decent for med school?, it honestly is an unknown realm to me;

URM ( does this even matter that much?)
Gen. Chemistry major, 3.7 GPA At the moment
A few reference letters, manage a small business which I invested in and helped grow larger
Starting to volunteer at hospitals now, so hopefully ?hundred hours in 2 years ?
Big Brother/sister program for a few years

I need to take Bio's ( any specific one the best for MCAT preparation?)
Need to take MCAT
Another important note is I am at a 4-year state school not a university, does this look bad?

So do I have a shot in hell at this? Does the rank of the med school =better chance at getting the residency you want?
Thanks for any help

1. Look at some websites for med schools you might be interested in eg.. State schools. Popular schools and see what their prereqs and other requirements are. This is just to give you an idea. Also speak to the PreMed advisors at your school.

2. Take a look around the Forum, most of your questions have been answered already in multiple threads.

3. Keep in mind that having a solid application package >>> being a URM.

Are you in law school, or are you an undergraduate student?

URM ( does this even matter that much?) It does, depending on whether your definition of URM matches that of AMCAS.
Gen. Chemistry major, 3.7 GPA At the moment Competitive for most schools, bump it up a bit if you are shooting for top twenty schools.
A few reference letters, manage a small business which I invested in and helped grow larger LOR's from science and non-science professors are usually what med schools want to see, but strong recommendations from others won't hurt. Success managing a business is definitely a plus.
Starting to volunteer at hospitals now, so hopefully ?hundred hours in 2 years ? Try to get in 4 hours a week, which would be four hundred hours in 2 years. 2 hours a week would be the minimum I would recommend if you can't pull 4.
Big Brother/sister program for a few years

I need to take Bio's ( any specific one the best for MCAT preparation?) Take the general bio I and II for biology majors, whatever that is at your school. Those will fill the minimum requirements. Upper level courses in cell biology, anatomy and physiology, neuro science, microbiology, and especially biochemistry (biology or chemistry department) would all be helpful as well, and some of them are required by some schools. You also, I assume, have the physics requirements already, 1 year with lab, and 1 year each of general and organic chem with lab?
Need to take MCAT Definitely want to do well on that, but you don't need to worry yet until your pre reqs are done.
Another important note is I am at a 4-year state school not a university, does this look bad? Schools that grant 4-year degrees (bachelor degrees) generally ARE universities, so I don't know what you mean when you say yours is not. Does it offer bachelors level degrees, and is it regionally accredited? If so, your GPA and MCAT are going to matter far more than your school name when you apply.

So do I have a shot in hell at this? Does the rank of the med school rank=better chance at getting the residency you want? If you are successful, keep your GPA up and get a comparable MCAT score, yes you have a good shot at admission. The rank of med school has some influence on what residency programs you can get into, the degree to which is constantly debated on SDN, but generally speaking, doing well in med school is more important than the name of the med school you attend.

My responses in bold after your questions above.

Stickies and the search feature. d-(^_^)Z

To answer one of your questions directly, yes, you have a shot as long as you do well on the MCAT.
