ok, so i don't know where to ask this question, you can move it if you need to.

i have finally decided to buy an iphone, its going to be my first smart phone, i eliminated other smart phone b/c i heard that iphone is the easiest to use..

i want to buy iphone 4, but i am going to buy ipad 2 in december, don't they basically have the same function only ipad bigger?

i don't want to spend $200+, if i am going to get ipad later on, so i am thinking about buying iphone 3 for now and get ipad in dec,

do you think its a good idea? how much is iphone 4 different from iphone 3?

"How much is iphone 4 different from iphone 3?" Is this a joke? You're so incompetent you can't use google on your own? god damnit what's wrong with you.

I wrote a useful response but, upon further review, I agree with the Deathstar even though he destroyed Alderaan. Jerk.

If you can hold off on getting an iPhone for the moment, I'd wait for the iPhone 5 which is supposedly launching sometime in the next few months (or at least sometime before the end of the year?). Not sure about all the new features this new iPhone will boast and whether the cost justifies a purchase over the previous models, but in any case, you can probably expect a drop in iPhone 4 prices by then.

As for an iPad, that's up to you- I'd forgo it if you're already set on getting an iPhone. While it may be a little easier to use some apps and navigate on a larger screen, I personally don't feel that I would use an iPad for things that I couldn't already do on a smartphone or iPhone.

And if you absolutely want to get an iPad, try to get one with 3G. IMO, a wifi-only iPad becomes an expensive paperweight after a while, especially if you're a heavy app user or like on-the-go web access.

3, 3GS are out-of-date. Get a 4 or wait for the 5, do not get a 3.

Also I'd get a Wi-Fi iPad, no need to let AT&T bend you over. There is free Wi-Fi everywhere, and you can always tether it to your phone if you must.

The 3gs is absolutely fine... but since the iphone 5 is coming out soon, i would just wait and get the 4 for probably cheaper than it is now.

Isn't the 3GS getting shut-out of iOS 5? I would definitely argue that iOS 5 will probably perform worse than iOS 4 on the same hardware.

Also OP, if you have any interest in 4G tech, you have to wait for the iPhone 5, and see if it sports a 4G chipset. You'll find a Qualcomm MDMxxxx likely in Verizon's for LTE access, I don't recall offhand what AT&T might get.

Of course, Apple may choose to just skip 4G this iteration, and still sell oodles of iPhones. 4G penetration isn't the best yet, but even us in economically trashed Michigan have gotten Verizon 4G in our major areas.

Everything I've read about iPhone 5 is that it will def. not have 4G.

Ow...pretty typical Apple move though. They're arrogant enough / have enough market pull to thumb their nose at 4G and still probably out-sell all the 4G-ready phones.

Whatever you do, do not buy now. Wait a little while until the new phone comes out. The 3gs is obsolete.

As to the 4g issue: i believe Apple's thinking is that 4g doesn't have enough market saturation yet to validate a redesign of their phones to fit the chip necessary to take advantage of the 4g network.

Why not also look at Android phones? I've used an iPhone 3GS for the past few years, but when it comes time for me to upgrade, I'm going to give a serious look to some of the Android phones.

No, indications are that the 3GS will support iOS 5. As far as I can see, the only features that will be disabled on the 3GS are in-camera photo editing and Safari tabbed browsing.

The iPhone 4 sports faster hardware, a better screen (higher resolution), and a different form factor than the 3GS. That's basically it. Whether one phone would work better for you over another depends on your usage and needs. If you have the money, go for the iPhone 4 - it'll operate more quickly and won't be outdated. If money is an issue, get the 3GS. It still handles well, although it's basically at the end of its life cycle - I'd be surprised if iOS 6 supports it. (Not that it necessarily matters - I'm still chugging along on an iPhone 2G (the original :) ) on iOS 3, and it does what I need it to do.)

No matter what you choose, I'd hold off until the iPhone 5 is released. The prices for both the 3GS and 4 will fall when it's out. Depending on how you're getting it (unlocked, free-standing, or through a carrier contract) you may want to be careful of the timing, though. There's a chance that when the 5 comes out, the carriers will stop offering the 3GS - the firesale prices for the 3GS will occur shortly before the 5's release.

The iPhone 5 will be released early October. I'm still carrying the classic iPhone 2g though. And I guess it's time to let go of it cause of the 5th generation. Gaad can't wait.
