the iphone medical apps are kick ass. my brother goes to OSU (who requires iphone from all students) and i can see what an incredible tool it is.

anyone know other schools taking the same route and requiring iphone use?

What about those that do not use AT&T or can not afford to purchase one? Do they give you an allowance of some sort?

I'm thinking this is the answer and the iPod Touch (think of the iPhone, minus the Phone) doesn't require a service contract with AT&T.

Yea, but the downside is that you can only use the internet it if there's a wifi connection nearby.

True, but I'm guessing that any medical school that requires the iPhone or iPod Touch will provide said wifi connection.

The doc I shadowed for a few months last year had Epocrates on hers and loved it. She was planning on getting the Netter drawings (or maybe something a little more basic) in order to have diagrams to show patients when explaining things.

She said she wished she had things like that available as a med student and resident for quick reference of things.

another reason why OSU is amazin'. it has all kinds of course-related stuff and junk on it. not sure if you have a choice between iPhone and iPod touch...but I'm on my family's T-Mobile plan so no AT&T for me.

There is no such product as an iTouch. It is called the iPod Touch. Sorry, I just hat when people do that.

Also I would hate my school if they made me get an iphone. It is a fine enough phone but I wouldn't want to be saddled with At&t. I'm happy with my droid.

I live in Houston and there is apparently awful AT&T coverage here, such that you can't get a signal inside most of the hospitals.

Completely agree. At a number of my interview locations, I lost 3G network and got Edge. And these were fairly populated cities.

I asked the AT&T guy about it and he said they are working on it. Apparently, the two areas that don't suffer from this are San Francisco and New York (b/c they "cover those areas well" according to him)

Our requires some sort of Epocrates-ready device, and most people seem to be going for the iPhone because the software is strong and it prevents the need for a dedicated PDA.

The only downside is that it's sometimes awkward to check your phone on the wards in certain settings (e.g. on rounds). If you pull out a Palm or a pocket Sanford, it's obvious you're looking up something medical. If you bust out the iPhone, you could be checking e-mail, texting, taking hilarious photos, etc.
