I rememebr a thread a while back about palm & iPhone programs and was wondering if anyone's seen any new programs for the G3 or the touch.

I came across a Netter's histo program but it was $40 and probably a little too basic.

I've really been thinking about an Ipod Touch instead of getting reamed by AT&T forever for an enormous monthly phone bill. I'm happy with $30 a month for 200 min with T-Mobile. I think having portable wifi internet like that would really be worth it since I'm always wishing I was near a computer to look something up.

If you really are always near a free wifi connection then the Itouch is pretty reasonable alternative to the Iphone..

Personally, I am not, and the $69 a month for 500/4000 min plan (with unlimited data) doesn't seem that unreasonable for a works almost anywhere internet device.

I used it to good effect this weekend tracking flights and weather to make sure my flights were ok, despite that tropical storm playing havoc with Continental flights (as Houston is the biggest hub).

Plus the touch doesn't have the GPS-lite features..

But your needs may vary.


I have heard there is an Epocrates for the iphone (but what pathologist needs that)
Iphones have the ability to read any word .doc file.
But they lack placeholding (or search) ability with makes reading a long file very annoying...

I downloaded ePocrates, but yea, knowing the shape, size and color of every pill from the PDR doesn't really help me (in any legal capacity, anyway).

The touch is nice for traveling, and it comes free with a Mac if you purchase one from now until Sept or so. Then again, having GPS, all-the-time internet access, a solid camera, email capabilities and the smugness of keeping up with Apple's iMania would be nice.

Well they suggest that the Ipod touch might have GPS, it would be based on connecting to Wifi stations, and if you are connected to wifi you most likely know where you are. I could see pulling up a google maps from a starbucks might be helpful. But it is not like you can use to drive down the street, or check traffic in route...

Personally, I think of the ipod touch is a widescreen ipod with wifi.

The iphone with mobile internet device with widescreen and other features which may or may not be useful to a given individual...


And back on the original track, I have seen some reader programs (3-6 bucks) that have enhanced bookmarks and the like...

No wifi, much less storage space (does it even have 1 gb?).. no GPS, shorter battery life, smaller screen...

Yes there are smart phones that compete with the iphone/itouch. This is not one of them.

Uhhhh....

1) has slot for SDmicro, so storage is up to 8GB + internal mem
2) YES GPS, always there but not accessible with old WM6.0 (now 6.1 and working)
3) true- no WiFi, but faster processor and fast internet speeds- WiFi stinks depending on where you are- usually not in range most places
4) can now get it for like $100 (with discounts)
5) Sprint service is $30/mo with plans starting $15 of course minus discounts... I pay $70 a month for 2 phones
6) uses WM and has A TON of free applications and some decent pay ones. Easily customizable to suit you needs.
7) yes smaller screen, but also smaller, lighter device

I'm not turning this thread into iphone haters vs iphone-philes..
so I'm not going to keep up with this features contest, you like your phone, that is great.

But I have to address your wifi bashing statement.
No one would claim that wifi is ubiquitous (that was my point about the touch vs the phone), but even the fastest 3G speeds don't come close to most wifi connections.

While that is true, you are limited by the processing power of your device. For example, I now use 3G, but my old Palm device was WiFi. My new device is probably 10x faster than my old device because it can process the web images much faster.

Except internal comparison on the iphone, wifi vs. 3g shows a vast speed difference (favoring the wifi), showing that the iphone processor is fast enough to handle graphics and data at either speed, so the processor is not a bottleneck on the iphone.

Geez, I read through this whole iphone debacle. Well I have an iphone that I am currently locked out of. It took me 5 or 6 hours to figure out how to hack and all of 5 seconds to update to the "new itunes", only to be locked out again and unable to use that POS phone. Really slick...

Its pretty sweet. You can use the Iphone as a modem and bluetooth connect your laptop (desktop) to the internet.

Not a bad deal for the 30 bucks a month data plan. You cannot get onto the internet for much cheaper than that.

They took the app off their site but it should be back soon.

you knew that when you tried to jailbreak it that there was a possibility that you would brick your phone and that you were voiding your warranty right?

You mean adobe PDF? The iphone has the ability to read them, I'm not sure about a search capacity.

There are some apps that have improved the iPhones ability to handle .Doc and .pdf files.. I am not sure about the search feature...

Just downloaded the iflipr program for making flashcards. You can imput the cards on the website and it uploads it to the phone so you can go over them offline. you can even put images on the cards which is nice for path. well worth the $10 👍

Yeah pdf and word docs. I could put a library on my pda, but it took so long to search them, they were useless. On a regular computer, they're very easy to search.

I have seen Robbins, Henry, and pathologyoutlines on Iphones in the ISILO format.

Very searchable.

Isilo (www.isilo.com) is a nice reader with searching functions and autoscrolling.

YOu can convert any html document to isilo format

You are correct. You do need an internet connection. Many hospitals have WIFI an option with Iphone so patchy reception can be overcome.

I don't know if I would say that many hospitals have WIFI, but certainly some do. However, as staff or employee of the hospital you have to make sure you are not violating terms of service by using it (it may be guest access only), and some hospitals lock their wifi down, and do not grant access (and I know of one in paticular that doesn't allow iPhones do to a concern about security (apparently)).

Just to say I wouldn't count on Wifi access..
