"These six people died of drug overdoses within a span of 18 months. But according to coroners' records, that was not all they had in common. Bottles of prescription medications found at the scene of each death bore the name of the same doctor: Van H. Vu".

But he completely rid them of their pain - you can't argue with that kind of success.

Fishman and Fine are also on that list....

was going to ask how one got on that list. now, i wouldnt want to be in that company...

The staff at the AAPM must be doing some soul searching right about now.

did you not JUST rail on others on this board for personally disparaging other docs?

THAT is why i call "irony". Or is it hypocrisy?

actually an interesting post, though.

not to name names ,You could have said it was the doctor with the last name that starts with V and ends with u

It would be interesting to read more about the case, ie, patients, doses, etc. It is ironic that he was ranking as "one if the best." Busiest does not always mean the "best." It's also weird that he didn't return calls from "investigators," if thats true. How bizarre is that?

Just when I think I'm being too restrictive in who I prescribe to, and with amounts/doses, I read an article like this and know I'm doing the right thing.

technically, 101N is pointing out facts, and did not disparage the individual.
there is no potential libel.

the implication is that he is a "bad" pain doctor, despite being listed as one of the best. thus, the irony. didnt come right out and say it, but same idea.

god, i am so glad im not a lawyer and have to wade thru all this stupid language nonsense.

I find these lists so amusing and misleading for specialties like ours where outcomes are so difficult to measure objectively, and treatments are far from standardized.

To really know the quality of care any doctor provides, you'd have to have a team of true experts (and who exactly is that?) go through a year's worth of charts, contact patients, etc.

Being on that list seems to have a lot more to do with notoriety than ability.

"accuses Vu of gross negligence, incompetence, and dishonest and corrupt acts for surgically implanting into a patient an expired medical device he "knew or should have known" was stolen."

What the heck could this be? Patient brings in their own expired spinal stim kit that was stolen? Weird.

Double post.

Also wholly appropriate. Whether you agree with Dr. Portenoy's approach or not, he is clearly a thought leader in our field

The title of the list is "Top Doctors" and it's marketed to the public. Clearly there are problems with the selection criteria if physicians with multiple opioid OD deaths, and a physician who single-handedly has done more to promote irresponsible opioid prescribing in the US can be selected and appear in print. This misinforms the public about 'what' constitutes a "Top Doctor".
