Is 18 'oldschool' ?
Started by njohns24
I believe the higher the DAT mark the higher chance to get in.
Why do you reply with your pointless, obvious, and often misleading remarks.
To the OP:
When I look at your GPA vs. DAT scores I immediately think that they do not correlate. With your GPA you should be 20+. The problem I see with your scores is not the 18AA, its the 2 16's. A lot of schools have a cutoff at 17 and this will pose a problem for you--especially with the importance that schools place on RC scores.
With your GPA all you had to get was "average" Dat scores. Unfortunately you have below average. What is your state school? I would say go for it if you meet the minimum requirements for your state school. Call them up, they will tell you. Good luck

Be more helpful otherwise what's the point posting that one careless sentence? You want to show off with your score? there are plenty of places you can do that. just to let you know this forum is to help those people who are wondering about their chances not your discouragement.
thank you! agreedBe more helpful otherwise what's the point posting that one careless sentence? You want to show off with your score? there are plenty of places you can do that. just to let you know this forum is to help those people who are wondering about their chances not your discouragement.
I actually think your GPA offsets the score, and you should be fine
methinks it would probably be oldschool if coupled with a < 3.2/3.3 gpa
Thanks! I'll need it I'm sure! And ya to your response, I have just never really been a good standardized test-taker. I have no problem getting it done in the classroom, but w/tests like these where SPEED is such a factor, I tend to struggle. My timing is the only thing holding my score back; like, my last section in sciences I did was GC; hence, the 16. Same story for PA (I bet I missed 10+ on pattern folding, but VERY few before it). So ya, I hate how such an emphasis is put on speed on these tests because I feel it really doesn't reflect, but oh well.
I go to the University of Tennessee and would be trying to go to UT for dentistry as well. I'll give them a call and check to see what their requirements are. And I don't see WHY RC is emphasized either..90% if ppl use search and destroy, like that really correlates, but I digress. Anyways, thanks for the input and let me know what anyone else thinks!
I'm applying to UT Memphis as well (my state school). You've got a great GPA. I'm not sure if UT has a DAT cutoff, especially for the 16's. Is UT the only school you're applying to?
**Question** What's considered a good/competitive RC score? Thanks!
For starters, thanks to everyone for all the useful replies and advice through this whole process.
Ok so, I took the DAT this wknd and didn't do so hot. Here are my scores:
PA: 20
QR: 17
RC: 16
BIO: 18
GC: 16
OC: 21
TS: 18
AA: 18
Alright, I know I didn't do as good as I wanted but I am curious, do people still get in with an 18? Or is 19 about the lowest for accepted students?? I have a 3.61 GPA and like 3.7 something science GPA, and a decent amt of extracurricular shadowing/research/etc. I am applying to my state school, what are my chances? I'm thinking about trying for it without a retake.
Do people get in with 18? Of course, there are people who get in with 17s and 16s.... a better question is, how often?
If you look at predents.com, you'll notice that about 15-20 of the dental schools nation wide have averages of 19 or higher on the DAT. Your odds of getting into those schools (obviously) is lower. But there are many dental schools out there with AA averages between 18-19, thats right around your ally.
I think your competitiveness is "okay", and If I was in your shoes (just my opinion) I would aim at the retake if I don't get in this cycle.
Good luck to you
