I haven't had time to do a lot of shadowing or volunteering. Is 20 hours of shadowing and about 35-40 hours of volunteering/community service insufficient?

YES

I recommend at least 500 hours....

To really get a feel of dentistry

IMO

insufficient you say? more like abysmal

I had 300 hours of shadowing. But it was spread out at 4 different places; a dental school, 2 different general dentists, and an orthodontist. Each place gave me a drastically different perspective of dentistry. Even the 2 general dentists gave me different perspectives. One was pretty average and the other was very successful with all the bells and whistles as far as technology. In fact, I didn't know that one could perform such a vast diversity of procedures and be so successful as a general dentist.

Yes, 100 is minimum, if you are applying to Georgia, you need 200 hours minimum. If you are applying this cycle I would find a dentist or 3 today (some schools want 3 different dentists along with the hours) and get those hours in in the next couple weeks, before you apply.

I'm currently sitting at ~90. I apply next year. Hoping to apply with ~150 hours, and I've been doing my hours during really busy semesters (not breaks). If I can do it, so can you.

Some schools require you to shadow or volunteer certain hours, some don't. So I would see if 20 hours if enough for the schools on your list. Personally, I had 40 hrs with GP and 40 with an oral surgeon. Volunteer hours probably under 50. No problem getting interviews or getting into schools. Idk how strongly the hours are weighted in the app since I had a high GPA and DAT, which I would think weighed more.
