I have a quick question. Some of you in the Jersey area may be aware that this is the first year that the pediatric residency program at St. Peter's University Hospital is separate from the residency program at Robert Wood Johnson. However, they have affiliated with Drexell and CHOP (including rotations for St. Peter's Residents at CHOP). In addition, they have been teaching the Robert Wood Johnson peds residents for many years and have a solid reputation.

My question is this: Is it risky to be a peds resident in a program that is in it's first freestanding year (although it has been a teaching hospital for many many years)? I am in particular concerned about the resident dynamics since there are no current residents to meet and see if you "click".

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

In general I would say yes, it seems a little risky to go to a brand new peds program since peds is pretty uncompetitive and many programs have trouble filling. Why would you want to risk it? I am totally unfamiliar with any of the programs you described so unfortunately I can't help much from that aspect but it sounds like the program may work out well if they currently are affiliated with CHOP.

ya sure is risky, and by the way quite a few other peds programs in the area also have their residents rotating at CHOP, which by itself has a huge peds program(obviously), so how much of importance is really goin to be given to outsiders?and with no residents to tell you about their expereinces, it is a tough call.anyways good luck to you.
