Is an Away Rotation necessary if there are two programs in my city?

Hey guys, sorry if this question is repetitive.

I am a rising fourth year. I very recently started leaning towards doing EM as a career...after having set up my schedule for a different specialty.

Given that I am late in the game for getting EM aways, would it be all right to do two rotations in my home city? There are two residency programs that both participate in our fourth year electives, and I'm confident I could do two rotations here. These would probably be in august and September. Otherwise, I could probably attempt to get an away in addition to my required elective, but I'm afraid it wouldn't be until October at the earliest.

How important is it to do an "away" rotation?

Appreciate your opinions.

Youll be fine. People match each year with just one EM rotation.

It depends on whether you want to leave your city. I did two rotations in my home city, and that was it. Fortunately one of them ended up being my top choice. I got plenty of interviews, but it certainly appeared that the invites were more concentrated in my geographical region than my applications had been.

So, if you want to stay where you are - you'll probably be fine. If you want to go somewhere else, you should strongly consider doing an away. October will be OK as long as you secure your SLOR author before the end of your rotation. November will be getting to be too late to get the SLORs to where the need to be in time for invites, since your SLOR wont be written until the end of the month.

Best wishes.
