is an commitee written rec letter better then a stack of letters sent by commitee?

Hi,

My premedical comitee is being ungodly slow about combining the 6 individual recommendation letters. Thing is, they need to have 5 professors interview the students to write the letters. AND they need to do several students in one session. So they are taking months to find a date that fits several students and all the professors schedules. (and they are being extra ordinarily uncommunicative).

meanwhile, i am filling out secondaries, and secondary deadlines are passing, and school are starting to interview.

so, i sent a terse (but polite) e-mail to the commitee, saying there are several deadlines passing, and I would like to do this interview and get my letters out.

They gave no hope of having the interview anytime soon, but said they could send out individual letters.

Should I use the individual letters? At all schools? or just the safety school? What would i loose from not having a premed commitee letter written. How much would i loose from delaying it.

keep in mind at least one professor wrote the letter completely aware it was just going to be summarized by the committee. Also, the schools with deadlines are glad to grant extensions, if i tell them a specific date.

usually its best to get the letter from the committee... luckily for me that the person who is in charge of writing the cover letter has known me for 5yrs and im on really good terms with her.

try to talk to the person in charge of it and hopefully theyll hustle up

My school does it pretty well...they write a cover letter based on your recs, an interview, a background info sheet that you fill out, and a personal statement, but they also send in the original letters.

okay, thanks. I guess there is a mix of opinions.

Piano girl, my school does basically the same thing.

Well, they're willing to interview me on the 12th., so they should have a commitee send out a packet with a summary cover letter in a week. And, they will still include the individual letters (if I request, which I will).

So, they prefer a cover letter summarizing the letteres (besides just one stating my Name, SSN, GPA, etc). How much does a week hurt me? I just thought I should get my file done as soon as possible.

Most med schools require to use the premed committee composite if possible, or else they make you explain why you didn't. I don't think a week will hurt you too much...a month maybe, but not a week. But that's just my opinion.

The great thing about my school's committee is that they take care of this during the spring of your junior year. That way everything is in your file and ready to go by the time you submit AMCAS. Cornell does its first mailing in mid-August, though, which sucks if you get a secondary earlier and can't send out your letters.
