I am new to this board and am always looking for places to gather information. I have been a practicing OD for 7 years and would like to know if anyone else is disturbed by other areas of this board, specifically all the negative posts on the ophthalmology and medicine areas. There is definitely a slant against Optometry and I still can’t believe it. Ophthalmology is on a slippery slope and Ok has shown them that they can be beat in the legislature. Here in TX they have not made any friends and it will be interesting over the next few years. My take is that there is more than one way to train ophthalmic surgeons. A challenging residency should be included but I do not feel that the only way to get into that residency is to get an MD behind your name. I also do not feel that the surgical procedures that optometry is fighting for fall under that residency. All learned punctal occlusion, epilation, foreign body removal, debridment, etc in the first couple of years of school. You could throw in a capsulotomy and iridotomy with that as well. Anyway call me naive but I would like to see as many competent posts on the ophthalmology areas as possible. There is a lot to learn form our fellow eye care practitioners so take advantage and reciprocate some knowledge.

I wouldn't worry about that. There are only a couple of doctors on the ophthalmology boards that are civil and reasonable and pleasant to debate. (Dr. Doan and mdkurt)

The ones that cause the trouble are usually OMD wanna-bes or residents who think their **** smells sweeter than most. Just ignore them.

Oh im not threatened by them. i feel it is their insecurity that leads to most of the junk they spit out. i actually enjoy the debate. i would however like to see more od's not just on this board but in general speak up. there are segments of our profession that i am not overly proud of, but i would suppose that would go with any. this is going to be a good time for all.

What truely concerns me is that that all of these medical school grads and future opthamologists are so arrogant and ignorant.... is the interview and essay process not supposed to weed these people out of the professionall school applicant pool to begin with? What ever happened to professionalism? I would expect those physicians, who we hold to be at the pinnacle of the professional world, to have a better appreciation for what is acceptable proffesional conduct. Unfortunately, a number of these have not yet learned their manners, or how to to conduct a civil discussion without inflaming the sensibilities of their opposition.

And they wonder why so many people despise physicians and consequently refuse to use their services...

Could this be another reason why some of us CHOOSE optometry and not medicine...
