Today I got accepted to both NYU and Temple...

So NYU is closer to home...Temple is a smaller class and I really did love the school and Brian sold it really well...but I loved NYU too..... and there is nothing like New York...

THIS IS GOING TO BE HARD! 😕😕😕😕

Dude. Temple. Way cheaper, way more patients and it'll be easier to get letters of recc if you need them since the class size is smaller. The facilities are nicer and philly is a great city and its cheaper to live in. Just my opinion.

i was in the same situation. if you have any questions, please feel free to either PM me or ask on this thread.

I agree with all of those things...however the hardest part is that NYU is just a 43 minute train ride on the LIRR home, and Philly is almost a 3 hour drive away...

Also, everyone who I told today (not involved in pre-dental or anything like that) seemed to be way more impressed by the name NYU..I don't know if that sounds silly...but it made me feel better...

It's not hard. I think Temple is a clear choice.

I'm in the exact same situation as you. I'm torn between the two schools.

Most people seem to advise me towards temple...I must admit I feel the same way...for me my main issue is going further from home...I think it may be worth it however...

I too was accepted to temple and will be attending in 2013. I have friends at both schools. My friend at NYU hates it, has a hard time getting patients in her chair & filling requirements. Don't forget the insane debt you'll be acquiring coming out of there $400k++. Temple is cheaper and produces top clinicians, less students feel the need to go into a GPR! This is not my personal opinion, just sharing what I've heard.

I was in the same dilemma, I live close to NYU as well(with family, significant other living closer as well). Skip all the way down below if you want a quick summary.

Why I chose temple:
To start, both schools are great clinically, so quality is fairly similar. I believe nyc would be one of most exciting cities to live in, but not during dental school. Yes you will have time to enjoy the city, but not nearly as much as you think you would, you will be studying most of the time, plus nyc is has very high living costs. so location was not a real factor as well.

I had a friend at each school, the one at NYU barely had time to talk to me, the one at Temple provided plenty of time to assist me. After interviewing, I felt that students at temple seemed happier/more laid back relative to nyu, and now being a D2, I can see why. Our class is very laid back, student help each other out, faculty is great, our DEAN is very involved in trying to satisfy the students.

The cost of living is very affordable relative to NYU, I have friends that pay from: $400/person - $1200/person depending on where you live. You can live in the suburbs and pay on the cheaper end, or center city and pay around $900-$1200/person AND have your own room(nyc is far higher, you are probably sharing a room, this is an issue for me because I need my space). If you end up commuting to nyu OR temple, I hope its 30min or less, because if more than that, it will eat away at you(unless you love waking up very early). The avg commute to temple from where most students live is about 10-30min(10 from the city, 15/20 from manayunk,25/30 from roxborough).

The idea of a large class sized was not only unattractive to me, but the idea of an additional 100+ international students was alot to handle. Not only would I feel like a number, but I felt that I could be replaced easily( not saying this happens, just saying thats how i felt).

At the end, I thought I would have an better/more comfortable time getting through Temple's curriculum than NYU's. Temple eases you into your 1st sem there, you only take biochem and histo as your main science classes(obviously other classes as well, but most other schools have anatomy built in, if not even more sciences.

The administration also really values all their students succeeding, it seems that it would be very difficult to be kicked out or fail out, since the faculty try to help out as much as possible.

OVERALL
Both schools are similar clinically, Temple is 100k cheaper over the 4 years(tuition+living costs), I enjoyed Temple's vibe/culture far more, and I am VERY happy I am attending it and have NO regrets. NYU does have a better location, but temple is safe and being able to live in philly has been pretty cool so far.

You can't go wrong with either school. GL

Where do you live in Philly and is this the same place you lived during your freshman year?

Do you use public transportation or do you have a car and drive in? Do people stay late to study in the library or does everyone go home when classes end?

Sorry for all the questions haha.

ill be in and out of sdn throughout the day, studying for finals in 2 days and all of next week.ha

I live in the suburbs, about 10-15 min away from school by car, not the same place as freshmen year, I wanted to move to get closer to school.

People study in the med school library, which is about 2-3 blocks from the dental school on the same street, and is right next to the main parking garage(that a fair amount of students park in). Students that live in center city use the subway, takes about 10-15 min to get to school.

Some ppl go home and study, some ppl go to the library and study, it depends. During this time(finals), a good amount of students will spend plenty of time in the library, when major exams are over, ppl will go home(except for the select few that are nerds and just live in the library).

Keep asking questions, I remember when I was in your shoes and wanted to know everything.

What is the the difference in cost of attendance of nyu and temple excluding the cost of living?

As far as I know...

Temple vs. NYU

Philly vs. NYC
300K vs. 400K
120/class vs. 360

The rest is what you make out of it.

dude
if your single than go wherever is the better school for cheaper
if your married than try living closer to home
obviously
