School starts in two weeks and Im starting to freak out a bit lol. I worry about the loans I will take out, my performance in dental school, and how prepared I truly am. During my gap year I worked to earn some spending money for school, but I honestly feel the material I learned in the undergrad science courses has gone from one ear and out the other at this point. Even in undergrad my grades were average/sometimes below average, although enough to get me in.

Should we have been reviewing all our science knowledge during the gap year? I remember a lot of things, but forgot a lot of things as well. Or am I just screwed and the only one feeling this way haha

I'm in the same boat as you. I've been out of school since 2012 and I feel like I'm going to get overwhelmed and not be able to keep up. My worst fear is getting dismissed and being neck deep in debt that I can't pay off.

The dentist I shadowed said that dental school material is totally new stuff and not to worry about forgetting past material. Dont know how much of that rings true.

You'll be ok. Statistically, it is unlikely you will fail out. Not only do you lose money, but so does the school.
If you find yourself struggling, speak up! Dental School is not easy, and you will find many people in the same position as you. Find a close group of 1 or 2 friends and work as a team. Teach them where you are strong, and learn from them where they excel. Dont struggle through something that can be taught to you quickly, and don't let your close friends do the same.
You will be surprised how many people will jump at the chance to help you, but it's up to you to speak up and ask for help. There is no shame, because there are others in the same position as you, but are suffering silently.
Congratulations on starting your journey! Work hard, stay focused, and you'll do great.

The hardest part is getting into dental school. That's the constant phrase I hear from many upperclassmen. Enjoy the journey. It's a small fraction of your life.

Cheers.

Don't study during your time before dental school. Just enjoy it while you can. You'll have the resources to succeed once you start.

I'm about a month into school and I was a bit nervous to start at times. Just finished midterms. It's difficult and there's so much that sometimes it feels like you'll never keep up with it, but everyone gets by. The cool thing is that all you need to do is pass your classes, but some people do like to challenge themselves and get straight A's.

Not nervous at all. Studying is the easy part for me.

The "harder" part for me is getting social, girls, etc--at least to my standards. We will see how I fare on that front in this phase of my life.

It's the largest investment of your life. It's normal. I'm nervous too

Right there with all of you. Dental School sounds scary.

My approach is to just take it one day at a time. Put in good effort, and work hard/play hard.

It's normal to be nervous! Once you are a few weeks in, you'll be so busy you won't even have time to be nervous though. It's crazy how much more worrying I do over the summer when I have so much free time to my thoughts, and often they are negative/stressful about the future. When I am so busy during the year, I stay positive and productive. Weird huh?

I suggest you never retire 😉

I'm class of 2012 and I am a 2nd year - you'll be fine, just stay on top of the material and don't fall behind.

I heard you guys are P/F like the medical students now, so it will probably be a much less stressful experience for you. Aside from that, just keep up with the material every day - they throw a lot of it at you but if you manage your time well it's tolerable.

Yup H/P/F. I'll be sure to keep up with everything.
