I am hoping to submit my application in June once the cycle opens but wont be able to take the DAT until the first week of August at the earliest.

I have taken the DAT before and scored 18 AA. I really want to do amazing this next time and I'll be finishing my Master's in mid July, so I don't have time to take it sooner than August.
I currently have a 3.9 GPA in my Master's and a not so hot GPA in undergrad.

Do you think I should be ok if I submit my application in June with my current DAT scores and anticipated DAT date listed?
My advisor doesn't really have an opinion on this so any feedback would be MUCH appreciated! Thank you! 🙂

August is perfectly fine. Just stay focused on improving your score. A great score will make you much a much stronger applicant. Your relatively delayed test date will be irrelevant at that point.

Excellent advice Shonster, and I agree 100 percent. MVD, improving your DAT score is most important and with your low undergrad GPA schools will be impressed to see DAT science scores at least 20. I work with students year round and our summer class does not end until mid August. Our students will take the DAT from mid-August through early September. Our students will get acceptances that take it that late, of course they must meet the criteria which includes a high DAT score.

Hope this helps and good luck in your studies and on the DAT!

where are you guys located and how can I be one of your students?

Thank you all!!! This put my mind at ease knowing I wont be too late in the cycle!🙂
Now to crack down on studying!

that's a bit too far for me to fly 🙂 do you guys do videos that demonstrates how to solve science problems?
Hey jefnawe, Orgoman22 is the creator of the DAT Destroyer and several other DAT study material. His books are gold! I highly suggest them!

In my honest opinion, August is a bit late. I think you should aim for early-mid August at the very latest. I took the DAT mid-July and I remember throughout the process, I had sorta hoped that I took it even earlier. Many schools do look at apps based on their completion date and being early is key. Since you have taken the test before, maybe you can just start reviewing information/old notes before your masters program is over? Then save the intense studying and practice problems for when you're done?

Just remember that everyone is in a unique situation and although late August might be fine for some, it might not be for others. If you know your stats aren't stellar, earlier is always better. Regardless of whatever you decide to do, good luck!

I have the books, but I'm the kind of person that learns easier by watching videos.

Hi Jefnawe,

Watch videos to strengthen your foundation but I highly encourage you to go through all the work in the Destroyers, I guarantee you will be glad you did on test day.

Wishing you the best in your studies and on the DAT

I took my test I think August 18th last year. I scored a 23AA and applied to 9 schools, had 4 pre dec interviews and I will be going to dental school in the fall. So I would say its definitely not too late to take the DAT in august.....getting a great score is all that matters.

I am taking my test end of August, I refuse to be pushed to take it sooner if I am not ready. A lot of my friends got in that took it that late, so I am hoping for the best and my focus is on a high DAT score.

Does this mean you apply as soon as the application cycle opens, but take the DAT several months later? The original poster already has a DAT score, but I do not, so I am not sure this advice would work for me. Also, I have yet to do any shadowing hours. I was under the impression that everything had to be finished when you submit your application. Was I mistaken?

Obviously not ideal but if you could improve your score by just one point per month of study time, decide for yourself would you rather apply in June with a 18 or Aug with a 20?

thank you very much for your kind words

I would suggest taking the test a little earlier. Although the score comes out immediately after taking the exam, it takes at least two weeks to process the score. You want to apply early in the cycle to get the better chance. Finish primary and secondary applications as soon as you get them and Aim for the early interviews! If you're interviewed early you're more likely to get the letter in Dec.
