my book lists bilirubin and urea as the main waste products in blood. i thought bilirubin was pretty much exclusively in bile? (i.e., produced by the liver and then sent to the gut, without much circulation potential)

Well, heme is catabolized into bilirubin. Bilirubin in tissues = jaundice. Bilirubin can't get to tissue without first getting into blood. Bilirubin, if I'm not mistaken, is also responsible for urine being yellow. So, while bilirubin isn't a major component of blood, I think it's safe to say that it is one of the main waste products carried by blood.
