hello,

i just got back my first chemistry grade and i got a C-. is this considered a passing grade? i just got done with freshman year

It depends. 70 or above is passing.

If it is below 70, then it is not passing & you must retake it.

Yes, it's a passing grade for your school, but keep in mind that for premedical prerequisites, you must pass EVERY prerequisite, including General Chemistry, with a grade of C or better. Even if you do somehow get into medical school, they'll eventually find the C- in a prerequisite class, and your acceptance could be rescinded. Look at the application requirements for every school; they all say C or better. Sorry; you've got to retake it. No I'm not kidding.

This is not an accurate post.

The requirements for medical schools are finishing with a 70 or above. The letter grade is actually irrelevent. This is due to the fact that letter grades can be variable from school to school. Some schools put a C- at 70 and some put it in the upper 60's. If in fact the OP has a grade in the 60's, then they obviously need to retake it. However, if the C- is a 70, then no retake needs to occur.

The "C" as posted on the school requirements refers to the AACOMAS C, which is 70-79. This may incorporate a "C-" depending on the institution.

What if it's in a non-prerequisite science class?

If it is in a non-prerequisite class, then you can be admitted and matriculate without retaking the course. If, however, your science GPA is not strong, it should be retaken (if the C- is below a 70, of course.)

I'd call the schools and ask them because I believe many schools will not accept a C-.

As you stated you are still a freshman in college, you still have a long way to go before applying to med school. Start establish a good studying habit and keep working on the concepts you are not strong in can only help you in the future. Maintaining a high GPA can only improve your chances.

If you can't maintain a science GPA of at least 3.5, then you are only hurting your chances when applying. You should think about why you got a c- in gen chem. I recommend you to retake the class because you will see it again when taking MCAT.

Good luck

Adcom is still going to lump that grade in the science GPA, so if it lowers your science GPA from 3.6 to 3.4 then it would still hurt your chances.

hi
just from personal experience...
i had to retake a C- class
i got into school but they are making me take this damn class for a C
otherwize i'm outta luck

I got in with some C's. It does hurt your GPA though. Of course, maybe that is why I didn't get into that many schools (a few DO schools but no allopathic schools).
