is cell bio like normal bio

no, its not. at my school, cell bio is an upper-division bio course. it has lots of memorization and is much more difficult than intro bio courses. if you study hard enough, you should be fine. 🙂

When I took cell bio, I did not find it to be much more difficult than intro. At UVa, it is the first upper level course a bio major must take. While the information is a good bit more in depth than at the intro level, I found because the course was curved, harder material = more room for error. Just my experience/two cents.

The lab in my school's Cell Bio class was pretty intense at times...learning a bunch of molecular techniques and having to write a 30 page paper.

Much more work than gen bio...

Hi guys,
i took intro bio, the stuff all pre-meds take, at my 4 year school. however, i gradutated, as a psych major, and then moved to another state to take some other classes while i wait to hear from med school.

i am in intro cell bio at this new school, which is the first of a four part series that bio majors have to take to take upper divs.

however, this cell bio class has a chem pre-req, yet it is so much like intro bio.

IS CELL BIO very similar to normal pre-med bio??? it has a chem req so i think it must be different but i could be wrong.

No, it is not like regular bio. Cell bio isn't just learning about the organelles or something. There is a lot of Biochemistry, which I would guess is the pre-req class you mentioned. I would say the most important thing is to keep up with the material, because it builds very quickly; at least it did in my class, but that was on the quarter system.

I didn't have to take that class as a Microbiology major, but I did because USC requires it. The lab was cool. It's like you're a real scientist or something when you run SDS-page gells. 🙂 Yes, I'm a dork. But the lecture was tough. The other thing is that by this point, the less competitive people are gone, all you have is people who are capable of doing the work (okay, there were a couple I wondered about, but by and large, it makes the curve tough).

Mine had a bit of biochem, and alot of physiology. I had already taken several physio classes and alot of it seemed like review. Mine was an odd cell bio class though 🙂

I don't know that it's much more difficult or whatever, but the material should be different. Cell bio usually involves more physiology, cell signaling, etc. It just covers more in-depth material.

Cell Biology is a freshmen bio course that is taken in the spring semester. Yes, we used the books (paperback) from Karp. It was a HUGE class (450+ students) and all lectures were a blur of PowerPoints and babbling from the prof who always made mistakes. Now, I'm taking Molecular Biology and even though Cell Bio is a prerequisite, the prof is very thorough and explains everything so much better. In my case, those two classes are very closely related. Except that I hated Cell Bio and it was a requirement. I absolutely enjoy Molecular Bio and I am taking it because I'm interested in it. 👍

Anyone using the Karp Cell bio text?

I do but the teacher doesn't even bother to use it. I have my first test next Wednesday and this class covers sooo much material. :scared: my class covers cell and molecular biology roll into one yippeeee 🙄

I agree. This is how my school is as well.

at my CA community college, there's intro bio and cell bio. cell bio is a freshman/sophmore class and required for bio majors. must be different than the upper division classes at universities.

I guess there's more than one kind of cell bio then. I was refering to an upper division class, and I thought that's what USC meant when they said they require it. I kind of hope so, because that class was not very fun.

When I took Cell Biology, last semester, we used the Karp Book. That book, in the later chaters, becomes very difficult to read. The course was very very demanding, but if you have a good professor what you learn will be rewarding. I am taking undergraduate histology this semester and am appreciative that the course in cell biology was taken. Not only is some stuff in histo so far review, but the large amount of material in both courses is comparable. My professor for cell biology and my professor for histology have very similar teaching styles so that is helping also.
