Hello All!

I am an African American woman with naturally curly hair, relatively like the picture below. Is it unprofessional/a distraction to wear my hair curly during interviews? If I did choose to straighten my hair and it ends up being humid the day of the interview, would it be worse to have a puff for hair?

Let me know your thoughts! 🙂

I'm a guy, but IMO, you are who you are. You have curly hair, so no sense fighting it to be unnatural. I like that hair style the way it is. 👍

Just MY opinion but curly hair is fine. Similar to the picture is fine.

I'm curious as to whether or not anyone has seen someone with cornrows or dreadlocks at interviews?

I would think it's fine.

Related question for the guys: any of you slicking your hair back for the interview?

lolll. ahh i have really long curly hair too. i dont think its unprofessional, i think it can be cute if you style it the right way. I'll be blowdrying straight though bc i feel more put together when my hairs straight...i only wear it curly to school/places i dont care to look fantasticall

Do it two weeks before and walk around with your suit on and ask around.

As long as you don't look like an italian mafioso it should be good! 😀

Be who you are!! I think that looks fine! And mind you, straight hair can be unprofessional if it's not styled nicely. An interviewer would need to be REALLY shallow and naive to think that curly hair is unprofessional... it's not like we get to choose what type of hair we are born with! 😉

Nice to see another "natural" around 🙂 I recently cut off all my heat damaged hair so I'm rocking a TWA so to speak. By the time I apply in 2 years and, hopefully, attend interviews, my hair will be longer leaving me with more options. I'm thinking of doing a really professional slicked back style not for the sake of hiding the curls but just as a style. Have you looked into really nice professional styles without straightening it? It's typically good to wear a style that keeps hair out of your face so it isn't a distraction.

I love the hair like that! Keep it natural 🙂
As for girls with straight hair... at what point is hair considered too long?

I think that your hair is fine, as long as you give off a clean and polished look. If anything, your hair will make you more memorable 😉

Your question should have been qualified by blonde, brunette or redheaded.

Natural curls >>> processed. The girl in the first post looks awesome.

I have thought about slicking my hair back but I've never found it attractive on me (I think I have a big head lol). But I look into some updos!

Updos are always in style 👍

I think it looks nice. As long as you look polished then that's all that it matters. You could also gel it and pin it back for a semi-up-do look. I think that would look lovely as well.

I can't believe the world we live in you have to ask these kind of questions 😕

lol it happens what can u do. the OP just wants to be safe!

I honestly would air on the side of caution and straighten your hair. However, ask around...if people really like your hair the way it naturally is curly, then maybe it is not a bad option.

Why would you think that hair looks unprofessional? lol. It looks cute. There was a beautiful dental student when I was in hygiene school who had that hair style. She was naturally drop dead gorgeous.

I will say wearing a lot of makeup would look unprofessional, or looking like you go to the tanning bed 5 times a week, or wearing clothes that are too tight. Lol. These are no brainers though for typical SDNers.

I don't think hair style is an issue. As long as you don't look like you rolled out of the bed with rat's nest hair pulled back in a pony tail (this is what my hair looks like if I don't blow dry it).😀

You have to realize that not everyone thinks that and some people can be close-minded. Some think that if your hair is super curly, it looks a mess and should be straightened, because of the frizz that tends to develop with curly hair. And when I say curly, I mean CURLY like curlier than that picture lol

I agree though.

Are you trying to pull off the '50s Mad Men look or something? Wear your hair the way you wear it. As long as it's obviously clean and kempt, there's no issue. I normally do my hair in a slight faux hawk and I've interviewed as such before; there's no reason to change.

As long as you're not sporting a mohawk or dreadlocks or something, I'm sure you're fine.
