Hi. I am a pre-med student and just found out more about being a DO when I found this site. Is it really the same as an MD? Everyone I know says they want to be an MD, dentist, or podiatrist but they never considered being a DO. Now I'm not familiar with it, but is a DO like a real doctor? Would I be considered as prestigious if I become a DO? And also, would I make as much money as an MD and be able to write prescriptions for my patients? I know that I can probably help people as a DO, but all of my doctors have always been MD's and I'm not familiar with being a DO. Thanks. 🙂

Maybe you should read any of the other posts. Hmm... posts? Yes! Read them.

You might want to go look at the American Osteopathic Association website for more answers if you haven't already.

Yes, DO's are real doctors (IE fully qualified physicians who perscripe meds and perform surgery).

No, DO's are not the exact same as MD's. DO's learn osteopathic manipulative medicine as well as a more integrative approach to health care.

Yes, you will make the same as MD's.

Yes, you can become prestigious if you work hard and are good... just like an MD.

Yes, you should visit the american osteopathic association website AND do a search of this forum. This topic comes up ALL the time.

I respectfully ask my fellow SDNers to abstain from feeding the troll. Thank you.

CheerChickMD69, if that avatar is your real pic, then yes, I would like to make out with you.

lol. I was wondering if I was perhaps the only one who noticed that...

May a shark eat you.

lol thanks 😛 .

Thanks to everyone for the helpful information about being a DO. It doesn't sound too bad and maybe I will apply to these schools too when I'm ready to apply to med school.

And when will that be????

ditto... with respect of course.

Now, normally I'm all for posting a "don't feed the trolls" sign, but this poster is potentially a HOT premed... so I'm willing to field her questions. Who knows? Maybe she'll send me a special thank you.

If you need examples of how DOs differ from MDs, I'm willing to demonstrate some Osteopathic Manipulation for you 😀

It'll give you a leg up during your first year. You'll know all about layer by layer palpation, soft tissue techniques, and myofascial release. If you're lucky, I might even demonstrate some HVHA (high velocity high amplitude) techniques 😛 😎

What are the benefits of all those things, if I may ask? lol (although I can sort of imagine  )

Layer by Layer Palpation will allow me to help me detect somatic dysfunction (of course, after doing a visual inspection) - part of helping me assess if you have any of the TART signs

Soft tissue technique should be able to relax some of your tense muscle and its associative attachment

Myofascial release will loosen your restrictive connective tissue, turning gel to sol

HVHA is quite dangerous and can cause harm. I should try HVLA but if one is too eager, one can easily go beyond the recommended range for a safe trust. I guess I need more practice.

there's hotter in my class alone..........then again I'm in south florida 😎 anyway, she sincerely sounds like she has no clue what osteopathic medicine. To not know what it is as a premed is one thing, but to not have ever heard of it seems pretty sad to me. Not that she is sad, but that we aren't fully recognized by the majority of the population sucks. anyway, just started school and gross anatomy can kiss my a$$.

about two years ago, i had no clue there was such a thing as a DO. sad huh? oh well... but i finally learned, and became quite impressed... this is a great secret we have going on here... why try so hard to tell everyone about it? i wanna keep it all to myself! hehe

seriously... check out the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) website, and the American Medical Association (AMA) website. They both answer this question specifically.

"A DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) is a physician just as an MD is a physician. For more information, refer to What is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.)?, available via the American Osteopathic Association. " http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/3627.html#4

I, too only recently heard about DOs. Now I'm jealously guarding that secret and providing misinformation to anyone who asks. MWAH HA HA HA HA!!!!

sigh. maybe there needs to be a mass marketing campaign to explain to everyone in american that DO=MD....and just maybe DO>=MD...lol...ok maybe not that latter one.....

Sniff 🙁 No one even noticed my evil and maniacal laugh.

You may very well be speaking to a man... I think the need to put Chick and Cheer and 69 in a name is kinda trying to cover something up... troll maybe? I know on another thread he/she said that he/she is applying next year for class of 2010 and then here he/she said applying in 2 or 3 years... that's why I said it's a troll in the beginning... 😴

And you may very well be a woman. I chose my name because I was a cheerleader through middle school and high school and I would still be one if my classes weren't so hard.

The truth is that I don't even know when the heck I'll be able to apply. I'm starting my junior year and I always wanted to apply for the class of 2010 but unless I take 2 sciences together for both semesters this year I can't. So it'll probably be 2 years and if they won't let me take physics during the application year it'll have to be 3 years.

69?? 😕 😕 😱

Some time ago one of the Moderator's (QuinnNSU) had a hot chick as his avatar and I can only imagine what everyone was thinking about him/her and then to find out she was he. Sick.
If other DO students would read this can you imagine how uncomfortable a female student would be in an OMM lab when you need to put your hands on her knowing your underlying DREAMS.
I know they are jokes but it shows what your thinking when anonymity is a factor.
GROW UP. There are ADCOM members lurking these boards and I if I were them I would do my damnest to find the individuals making these childish comments and make sure they were not admitted. I would really suggest posting these kind of comments in a different forum, but I am not a moderator so cares what I say.

It's my lucky number :luck:

Plus I put it in my AIM and Yahoo name.

that is quite an interesting lucky number. mine i guess is 17. it reminds me of God, everywhere i go, everytime i see it, i think of God, and pray.

Have a beer.

Are you even old enough to have a beer? Are you even in Med school, if you were you would understand that the type of behavior I was referring to would get you a one way ticket out on your arse. My comments, perhaps a bit harsh, were only to remind people that they are going to enter into a professional career and that comments concerning sexual behavior are looked down upon. I myself have made some unwise comments on these forums and have since changed my ways.

You better get back to Church. :meanie:

ummm... guessing here, but possiblly review historical norms, plot a chart to graphically understand human trends both up and down given the political/socio-economic atmosphere at the time, and adjust for various currency differences. allign the new values to the present values and you should then be able to discern any unwarranted values in the market. 😛

Now, for a serious response. Listen, if a girl comes on to an online message board with the screen name "CheerChick69" and a rather seductive avatar she will get the same treatment as if a guy came on with the name "The Penis." I don't go up to random people on the street and tell them I want to have sex with them, but just because you are entering a professional career doesn't mean you have to be a TIGHT ASS LIKE YOURSELF. 👍

uh oh.. name calling 😱 . additionally, the scenerio you are suggesting is one in which many people have been sued for sexual harassment. your perceived signals are perhaps that of a black widow... have a good day..... :meanie:

plus i bet a guy with that handle would be mocked and ousted. and her avatar is not that seductive. 😛

If you don't consider taking two science classes per semester for both semesters you should never even consider applying to med school. so you should grab some nuts, if you have any, and take the classes. I think the average premed takes AT LEAST two per semester. maybe start thinking of a backup plan too in case you can't get done in your 6 years in school.
