I'm currently a freshman and I'm planning on taking my DAT the summer after my sophmore year. I'm trying to pick the most important upper level bio classes to take during my sophomore year to better prepare for the dat.....what would be more helpful, genetics or microbio?? Thanks 🙂

freshman year take intro to bio I and II
Sophomore year take Genetics and Microbiology..

I am a sophomore and this is exactly what I did and im taking the DAT this summer

I took my DAT the summer after my sophomore year. By then, I had taken principles of biology 1 and 2, as well as Molecular and Cell Biology 1 and 2. I would recommend Microbiology over Genetics, as there are far more questions dealing with cells and useful techniques versus genetics. I took Genetics this past fall semester, and I must say looking back on it, I doubt Genetics would have helped me much on the DAT.

I took both classes and in my opinion I don't feel like you NEED them to do well on the Dat. Personally I took both of these classes prior to taking my Dat and can honestly say that I remembered <5% of the material. You gotta review it. IMO. my score wouldn't change at all even if I didn't take these classes.

Having said that I think you SHOULD take them anyways bc if anything a strong upper level science enriched schedule will prepare U 4 grad.school. Also, good performance in upper level classes like the ones U mentioned looks good to adcoms aswell

FWIW, If I had to pick I think microbio would have helped a little more on my version of the DAT

I think Micro would have helped cement some concepts that I saw on the DAT bio portion, but is far from necessary. Genetics is the same deal. Myself and several buddies who prepped hard took the DAT w/out upper level bios and we all got 22+ on the bio portion. Though, it would have been easier and taken less study time with micro, by about 10 hours of study time.
