Long time lurker, first time poster.
I volunteered at a hospital second semester freshman year into the summer (Feb 2017 to Aug 2017), gathering exactly 100 hours. However, the hospital is kinda far away, and balancing classes, work and clubs sophomore year was a lot. The hospital was a 30 minute bus ride away, and the only shift I could work was 8 to midnight, so I needed a family member or an uber to get back home. As a result, I decided to stop and focus on school for a bit. I tried applying to the closer hospital, but the interview slots filled up a lot faster than I expected.
It is now the summer after my sophomore year and I am volunteering at a different hospital. This hospital is walking distance, and I plan on staying here as long as I can (I genuinely love the work).
Just to get the most info here, in case it matters at all:
- I work two jobs, both of which started April of freshman year. One is a lab assistant making agar and cleaning beakers. This has evolved into a research position. My other job is as an at-home caretaker for my mother. It's a hard situation to describe here, but I'm mostly worried adcoms would see this as a fake job because it's for my mother. The jobs are so I can support myself and help my family.
- The club I'm involved in is a drama club, and I have been the director of multiple plays, a stage manager for some, and a writer for one. I don't know if this means anything, but I'm committed to it and I've been told it shows some leadership (I'm kinda doubtful, though...)
Sorry if this is a stupid question; I tried asking my pre-med advisor but advising at my school sucks.
