Is high TOEFL score necessary?

Hi all,
Just wondering how important the toefl score is? Is that ture that as long as the score is beyond the required score, it won't play a key role in final decision?
I just do not want to waste too much time on improving it continuously.
Please give some advice.

That is right. But I hope it is meant as some kind of range. Like 100+(iBT) should be enough? Any possibility?
Mine stat is 104(iBT) and Part 1: 90(old); a little bit concern that toefl will have some negative effect.

i think it depends on the requirements of the univ you are applying; meaning if they ask 80, 104 is a very good score, right? but if they ask 100 you are just above the line, but you're there, you met their demandings...you should be safe...and again you will be compared with all the applicants..that's why i said higher, better...
your nbde score is a good one so i think you stand a good chance;

While schools essentially want to see a toefl score above the minimum requested, a higher score will definately add weight to an application. All this scores are essentially used to short-list the students for the interviews. Although toefl may not have been as critical a few years back, recent assesments carried out on foreign students have concluded that toefl, more than any other exam, is the best indicator of a foreign students transitioning smoothly in a US university. Such reports have resulted in universities taking toefl scores more seriously. While this may carry more weight for students who are taking a first degree, it definately doesnt do anyone any harm to have a high toefl score.

Just got my toefl score. I called them and was told that it would be atleast another 10 days before the schools would recieve the scores. Is it okay if the score reaches a little for uic?
