Is it a good idea to apply to several DO schools with a 3.7/32?

Hey guys,

3.7/32 is above the median GPA/MCAT for one of my state schools and about the same for the other one. Both schools are strongly biased in-state. So I feel like I only have two schools where I have a really solid chance. I will apply to about 30 low and mid-tier M.D. schools but I was wondering if adding in about 5-10 DO's would be a good idea as well with these kinds of stats. I have good leadership, clinical + non-clinical volunteering and research.

Don't waste your time and money on DO schools unless you love OMM.

You'll probably get in somewhere, unless you have poor extracurriculars or a bad letter of recommendation. Since I am neurotic, I'd apply to some D.O. schools if I were in your position, just for the peace of mind of having safety schools.

Good luck! 🙂

I wouldn't bother, but if you do, make sure you are prepared to go to the DO school if it happens to be your only acceptance.

These are my stats as well and I'm in the current cycle. I applied early to a good number of MD schools (but not 30) and I've received 5 interviews, two of which were state schools. Haven't heard any decisions yet, but thought I'd chime in with my perspective thus far.

I would add just a couple, but 5-10 is too many. I agree with the bolded above, though. Only apply to schools (MD and DO) where you would absolutely matriculate if it was the only place you got in.

Like the above posters said, will you go to a DO school if they are the only ones to accept you?

I know this girl who applied to our state MD schools 3 times and failed to matriculate. She finally applied to a new DO school in a neighboring state during round 4, and she was accepted. She ultimately decided she wanted to give the state MD one more go since they actually interviewed her late in the cycle last year and waitlisted her. She deferred the DO acceptance and paid their deposit of 2000 dollars. So long story short, if you can see yourself be a DO, then apply to a couple, 4 max. If not, don't waste your time and money. You can buy a nice MacBook for all the money you would otherwise waste. 😛
