In short, I finished my personal statement and am starting to pre-write secondaries. I found, however, that a lot of schools have secondary essays that overlap heavily with my personal statement.
Do you guys think it is okay if I use the same 'starting point' for my personal statement and secondaries so long as I differentiate the two?
For further clarification: my personal statement overlaps heavily with the prompt "what diversity do you bring to the medical school class / why is diversity important in medicine? "
For my personal statement, I hope to explain why my background motivates me to go into medicine and can equip me for the hurdles inherent to medical training whereas in my secondaries I hope to explore why my background can both improve a medical school class and enable me to be hopefully become a more compassionate physician.
Only about seven of the schools on my list (out of 21 or 22) ask for this as a secondary so I would not want to change my personal statement. My gut tells me 'yes' but I figured I would consult external people for some more objective advice. I do not, however, want to come across as a one-trick-pony.
If 'yes': Do you think it would be wise for me to address the obvious overlap between the secondary essay and my personal statement? Or should these each stand independently? I would personally want to address the overlap to avoid what I previously called coming across as a 'one-trick-pony.' I do, however, see the value in having each essay stand on its own.
Thank you!
