I’m writing two of my med school essays on different topics, but they have the same kind of theme. Is it a bad thing to have two overlapping essays even though they explain different things?

Two essays with a common theme is good. It helps develop a narrative and possibly illustrate where your passion(s) lie. Two essays about the same story, however, would show limited experience and probably not be so good.
