i want to briefly talk about all the values that my grandfather taught me during my early childhood (great grandpa was a nobleman in China but the family got "burned" during the chinese cultural revolution, still my grandpa was soooooo uptight about everything, he literally whooped my ass with sticks when i was 2)

what do you think?
reason i want to talk about my grandpa is that i want to avoid giving the impression that i was taught by a commie, you know what im saying (im 100% capitalism)

seriously?

what values are you talking about? beating small children with sticks is probably something you want to leave out.

saying that you learned the value of hard work, ok, but I don't see how the whole nobility thing plays into that. unless it means that you can write the school a very hefty check for a new hospital wing, I don't see how it would make much of a difference.

are you kidding? my sarcasm meter is out of whack.

all those crap about relationships, greed, respect, etc

i dunno, when my friend first read my autobio (without mentioning about the family), he thought my grandpa was a commie and he taught a lot of commie stuff
>_<

i mean does it matter?
i really wanna avoid being accused as a commie, so i wanted to add some stuff to hint that i dont like commies, u know what im saying?

I'll bite. Your great grandpa was the nobleman so even if you WANTED to mention your noble lineage, you can't because the line ended after the Communist takeover and your grandpa and your parent and you are no longer noble so it's a moot point.

no ****

see, have u guys even read my question?

if i dont mention anything about his background, ppl would generally think that he was a commie
do u think thats bad?

OR i can simply skip out my early childhood and go straight into my elementary?

Is it really that much quicker to type "u" instead of "you" ?

I think it would lend some flavor to the story if you told them about the complete background. I probably wouldn't skip whatever part you think is going to label you as a commie. That's my opinion.

Just for fun, could you throw "pinko" into your next post?

I don't think that a reasonable person will think that your great grandpa was a communist. Just mention that he was social elite prior to the Communist takeover. Give the story some social context but keep in mind that YOUR biographical information is not a family history lesson. At any rate, I don't think you need to worry since I don't think adcoms will stare at your app long enough to decide that you had communists in your family. If they did, every mainlander would be screwed.

are you afraid you are going to be blacklisted? is this 1950? even if they do think your great grandfather was a communist, do you really think they would care?

Did a med school request a complete autobiography??

If so, this would be YOUR autobiography, not your grandfather's. If you go into such great detail that he is painted as a communist, perhaps you are not staying focused on yourself. Spin it so you discuss the values he taught you, keeping the focus on you and why those values are desirable for physicians. Even if the readers would get a commie feeling, why should your grandfather's perceived politics have any effect on your admission?

As long as you have the ability to discuss it, why not? At least, you know the possible intention of your grand pa, right? When did you begin to appreciate or hate it? And what you're going to do to your own children may be more important. Wouldn't it be nice if you can set the adcoms up with a controversy of your own choice? Good luck.

true eh
yesyes, i'm gonna use that social elitist bit, that sounds MUUUUUUCH better
thx!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ps: vandy from last year asked for one

I would not incorporate ass whippings into your application....but I know where you are coming from!...My grandmother used to tell me to go get a switch off the tree so she could spank me with it....and if I intentionally got a really really small branch she would go out and pick the branch herself and then really really let me have it!!!!!
Oh those were the days....:scared::scared::scared:😱😱

Lots of Chinese people suffered in the cultural revolution. Millions starved. Millions died. What's new?

It wouldn't have happened if only McDonald was there then.

Awww...I saw the word nobility, and thought that this was my chance to laugh at a descended elitist who has to go through what the rest of us go through without any entitlements or trust funds. But your just talking about communists. That's no fun.

Interesting, does anyone know if adcoms would scrutinize or assume any political point of view in a personal statement or an interview?

Making assumptions will not benefit them in any way. They will ask your thoughts on improving health care and likely question whether or not you support universal coverage. They can assume politics from your viewpoint, but why would it matter?

If it does matter to the committee or interviewer, should you go to that school? Do you want to work with people who don't accept your political party affiliation, religion, or position on ethical issues?

I'm not sure how that'd help your personal statement. I suppose if you can find an angle in which it would, why not?

Two of my great, great x multiple grandmothers were queens. One of them being the mother of the most famous king in my country during the mid 15th centry. But, I'm not sure what they have to do with me wanting to be a physician. So, the thought of including them in my PS never crossed my mind.

The thread title sounded like you were nobility as in belonging to a rich family or something. Then the med schools would probably want that because they would like you to donate money to them. Also I thought the last emperor of china died.

A lot of adcoms buy a lot of things made in China now, don't they?

A lot of them commies are even richer than any emperor in the past right now, I bet.

 Hey, dudes, bring some more McDonald, would you? Pleassse... I'm still starved!
😱 Bring some diet pills too, just in case.......

wtf are you talking about.

wtf are you talking about.

key words "China Economy"

Wikipedia:

“....These reforms started since 1978 has helped lift millions of people out of poverty, bringing the poverty rate down from 53% of population in 1981 to 8% by 2001.[3]........"

And it's 2007 now.....

Not to mean this the wrong way, but unless you have amazing stats, I would hold off on doing this secondary until you get it. They only send secondaries to the people they interview so that's only ~1000 people out of their application pool and it will come later than most of your other secondaries.

I've heard it's a big problem at interviews to be accused of being a pinko commie-sympathizer. Steer clear of the Iron Curtain!

shantster, i thought about that too, last time i applied, i was given interview at vandy, but I had to withdraw all my app due to family problems (big ones that might affect my tuition affordability, i told the school too)
i figured if i were able to get an interview last year, i'd likely to get another this year considering tje much more EC i have done this year, and a masters degree
and since i have all these spare time at lab, why not start working on some secondaries

ya, those things eekonomics said are what worry me........not that i am a commie, but just wanna point out that i aint one and my family history is a damn good evidence, you guys know what im sayin?

I just want to say that I've never laughed so hard reading a thread in my life.

How about you mention you grandfather was very strict as a result teaching you discipline...blah blah blah... and not worry about it....

thats what i did in my first draft
all i said was, he was very strict and wanted to teach me his values

my friend after reading it was like, "ur grandpa a commie?"

u know what................
i wouldnt worry about commie this much if it werent for him.....
man, i wanna smack my friend right now.......

Well your friend was probably joking or saw a connection most others won't see. I'll go ahead and shoot myself in the foot and say that a white middle aged adcom isn't going to draw the connection as quickly as your friend did (who I'm assuming is asian).

he's actually a newyork born and raised white kid...........

What does your great grandfather getting burned in the cultural revolution have to do with your competence as a Doctor?

Being "100%" Capitalist hardly distinguishs you from others. Learn to draw the line between your family history and who you are as a person.

I believe that everyone gains the full status of "a person" sometimes close to high school graduation, right? I find it hard to believe that adcoms would completely ignore past history prior to that but rather have an advice from adcoms now...... Wait a minute, hey DocOB! Are you one of them honorable adcoms? Come help me before you suddenly drop dead laughing, please.....

Your reply is killing me, Doc.

I suggest you use the word "commie" repeatedly throughout your PS as you have done with this thread.

😱 how did you do at the regional? what team did you play for?

the what? My sig/avatar are a reference to the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the championship of North America/Central America/Caribbean. (and now the Copa America, with the USA playing tomorrow)

Sorry, my mistake. the USYSA had a logo like that at its web site too, but it looks different now.
The Copa America that Uruguay was upset by peru 3-0 today, right?
Go USA!

Now I'll let you get back to the commie business. I'll be on my way waiting for some adcoms.... wait a minute..... COMmie....adCOMs.... HEY! YOU! *reaching for a red card in my pocket *

actually 3 of the first 4 games have been upsets. Mexico beat Brazil today and Chile beat Ecuador.

Asian people are crazy, trust me I had a similar childhood! Skip, skip, skip straight to elementary!

Autobiography?? How come I didn't have to write an autobiography... is it on a secondary application or something...

So we're going show Brazil how to play soccer soon, right? But I guess we have to learn it from Argentina first, today. You know that Landon, DeMarcus, Clint Dempsey and Carlos Bocanegra are not on the roster, right? Landon and DeMarcus tandem beat Argentina when they won the World BU-17 several years ago. I believe they won the world title in that tournament beating Ghana 1:0.

In the mean time while we're waiting, let me look for an advice: Suppose my dad personally started to coach me soccer when I was eight. His coaching during that early stage of development helped me become a very good multi-sports athlete who had a lot of accomplishments (up to the levels of state championships and interstate competitions) until my high school graduation. Could I take any advantage out of those experiences in my PS? What if coaches often made me captain of the team only because I was a better team player than everyone else, should I mention my dad at all? He had a lot to do with it.

hey, if you can word it right, go for it. I was never much of a player myself.

But damn, the first half tonight against Argentina was great... but the floodgates opened later. Oh well, it all comes down to Paraguay on Monday. 1-1-1 should get them thru with at least 3rd.

as for the 99 U17 cup, the USA actually finished 4th, losing to Ghana in the 3rd place match after falling on penalty kicks to Australia in the Semis... however Donovan and Beasley were voted the 2 best players in the tournament.

As for beating Argentina, it was a Benny Feilhaber led U20 world cup team that did that in 2005 1-0. Messi came in as a second half sub and made the game very interesting.

Thanks. Congrats to your memorization. Step 1 should be a piece of cake for you. And I need to quit guessing, believing or even betting too much before I go bankrupted.

I hope that the US team had planned to play only defense like that. They didn't seem to have any interest in keeping the ball in possession at all. But I was happy to settle with a goal against such a powerhouse team.

BTW, do you think adcoms know soccer at all? I’m afraid that they might still think that it's kind of funny.

actually at my interview at jefferson, when I mentioned that I was a soccer fan, my interviewer basically said "well, I'd say you're in then" (probably in half-seriousness, but the interview was already going well. He was English though.
