I have about 2000 hours EMT for a year and half before I became a scribe for another 2000 hours.
I quit the scribe job back in July, spent July-August working on secondaries, and now I have been job searching for about 2 months with no success. I've been applying to research, ED Tech, etc. but I understand the job market is generally not ideal right now especially in research. I'm thinking of just going back to being an EMT, but I'm worried it will basically do nothing for my application next year if I need to reapply due to diminishing returns. Of course the cycle is far from over, but I would like to keep improving my application just in case. I heard med schools judge reapplicants by "new" things that have changed since the previous app, which is why I'm hesistant to just return to being an EMT. Would it be better to get a nonclinical retail job so I can at least develop / write about new skills?
Since quitting my scribe job I've been volunteering with a soup kitchen (new experience) multiple times per week, continuing my main volunteer experience from this year's app, and just working on developing my hobbies. So I've been doing something, it just doesn't feel like enough since these are not full time endeavors and not as "substantial" as a clinical job. I'm creeping into 4 months of being unemployed, probably closer to 5-6 months by the time I actually have a job, and I am worried admissions committees will think of this long gap as a red flag.
Should I just return to my old EMT job? Or should I keep trying for something new?
