im going to take my gen chem exam on tuesday..no matter how much i study i just cant remember everything from the whole semester (cumliitive). My lab grade is better, but i pretty much suck at lab as well.

I really want to get in to dentistry because i like the technical aspect of it. The idea of actually working in the mouth. Seeing a problem and fixing it. Helping people. But, science is not my forte 🙁

Question:
I know dentistry school will be tough. But what i cant stand most are labs...when it comes to histolology, microbio, biochemistry, anatomy etc in D school, are they just lectures or do they come with labs? Are the labs like in undergrad? If they are labs that have to do with dental technique, i dont mind that. But are they like in undergrad???

Random Question:
At my school theres an online lecture/lab for one of the bio classes. How does that figure. Have you guys ever had this when yall were in undergrad? How do you take a lab online? You think admissions would look down on this if i took that course?

I'd appreciate any input pleassseee!!!

My labs in college were horribly torturous, mostly because not a single one had a good lab manual, and you always had to fumble around to figure out what in the blazes was going on. In my physics labs, the manuals were so poorly written that the TAs didn't even know what was going on half the time.

It'll depend on your dental school. But, for what it's worth, I enjoy lab infinitely more in dental school than I did in undergrad. I hated lab in undergrad; always dreaded it, always felt so crunched for time that I couldn't learn anything. In dental school I definitely learn in lab, mostly because it's a different nature of lab.

As for the didactic portion of dental school . . . well . . . all I can say is that the Memorization Olympics can't last forever, and you'll be done with dental school eventually . . .

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go study for the 9 tests I have spread out over the next 7 school days. Take heart, though - only three of them are cumulative!

There are some resemblances to undergrad labs like using bunson burners. You have to work with various materials, and manipulate them. I would say dental school labs are more similar to shop class. The only annoying part is like undergrad lab you have a lab manual to read, and figure out what it is saying so you can do the lab assingment. However in dental school, you will repeat things over and over and over again, so it gets to be second nature. But dont worry, I never enjoyed undergrad labs, and also dental school lab can be frustrating, once you get the results you are looking for, it can be fun!

Almost everything in dental school is dental related. Some things you will never do again, but because it is somewhat related to the field of interest i is easier to study. I like the restorative classes, materials, and the dental related biochem/histo because it is what I am interested in. The oher stuff is jumping through hoops.

Undergrad < dental school

Everything is pretty straightforward and to the point in dental school and the professors are not (most of them) out to get you like the undergrad ochem or gen chem professor who likes to flex his brain power.

All of the preclinical labs (which take up most of the second year in most dental schools) are dental related. Basically, they need to be sure you're ready for human patients.

However, in your first year, labs like gross anatomy and histology may feel similar to your undergrad science labs. However, they aren't as frustrating as orgo labs where you sneeze and blow away a three-week project 😉 It's just loads of memorization and stinky cadavers.

Thanks guys, I feel better about it all now 😳 . I'm glad to know there's only a little bit of classes that have labs similar to undergrad.... I really appreciate it. Please, wish me luck on my chemistry exam today :scared:

Thanks, again!!
