I just got back from a college get-together to find out that alot of the kids I knew in college are now in low tier allopathic/osteopathic medical schools, after taking a few years off to do post-bac or research. Now, I don't have a problem with this execpt that I knew these kids and they were huge slackers in college, did a ton of drugs, skipped classes and got like low 20's in their mcats. These are kids who I wouldn't trust with my beer on a saturday night, much less my life after a MVA. Is it just me, or is it starting to get entirely way too easy to get into med school nowadays????

People change.

Medical school is no place for slackers, adcoms make sure of that.

If they pass, you should trust them with your life after the MVA.

Keep in mind Doctor of Osteopathy = Excellent Doctor.

I wouldn't call anybody who's earned the title of MS I, II, III, or IV "dumb". Maybe you just don't know them as well as you think you do.

They sure do. 🙄

Wow...If that were true, I'd be on the streets begging for change.

I know of a person with a great MCAT and a great GPA who was a slacker & probably like your friends. I don't think you can stereotype people as slackers just because they have low numbers. People can have great numbers and still be slackers.

Buck...who does medicine belong to? Does it belong to the academic elite only? The training we receieve is long and intense for a reason...no matter what their background, the youthful indiscretions of others will be miles behind them when it comes time for dealing with your MVA.

I say, whoever made it this far...give them a chance...the boards will weed out the true "slackers"...but if I don't pass the boards, let the record reflect that I am not a slacker.

where there is a will, there is a way...

I don't think Buck is hatein'

I was a slacker in college, but Med School doesn't allow me to do that.

From the readings of it, he's smart enough to continue the slacker tradition through med school. God Bless, I wish I was that talented.

I'm not sure about dumb people; for certain a lot of weirdos though.
Seriously though, what I noticed is a lot of people who strongly believe that C=MD, so they are slacking off as much as they can, which is an intellectual waste I think, especially considering their efforts in undergrad. And yes, there are many doctors I would not entrust myself to after an MVA, but thankfully those kind of docs don't have the scores to enter competitive residencies like EM. So, in the long run, while MedSchools may not be weeding out people, specialty choices do.

Also, keep in mind that these slackers might end up being the best doctors. Patients think doctors are best based more on personal interaction than on MCAT or USMLE scores.

In my school I have some friends who smoke lots of dope but they do well in school and all 3 got 240+. One wants to do plastics, one optho, and one Derm. Go figure!

You just have to hope that the med school and residency adcoms will screen out all the undesireables (i.e. those you wouldn't trust in an emergency situation).

If there is one thing I have always noticed about people in school, it's that there can be a huge difference between book smart and life smart. I've met some people that I thought were total crack heads, but later found out they were super smart. Outwardly I look like a ******* all the time, but I do pretty well at school...

it's "a lot", not alot.

and no, i haven't noticed anyone 'dumb'. selfish, petty, competitive, sure. we have some of those.

everyone has different strengths. if you saw me attempting to tie surgical knots, you might think i was pretty dumb. but you'd be wrong!

As people have said, people can change. If they struggled hard to redeem themselves and repair the sins of their past, got into a med school and suceeded, who are you to fault them?

Kind of reminds me of the time I was in the Marine Corps and would hear all the salty old jarheads saying things "It was tougher in the Old Corps" or "These new kids have it easy...in my day in the Old Corps" etc etc....

So, no, it is not getting any easier to get into med school, id say. At least not anything worth mentioning. Its not like some stinking burouts smoking the hippie lettuce all day are allowed in.

My hero's!

Not every slacker is quite as lazy as you think. For example, I don't go to many lectures. Why? Because I dick around and fall asleep. Instead, I study the material on my own. It's worked well for me.

A lot of MDs and PhDs smoke up, too. I know several and don't get the impression that this is a particuarly rare phenomenon.

So, in summary: chill. Take off the gunner hat for a few minutes.

Bingo! 👍

I would agree with OP that there are more and more dumb ppl in med school. I have no idea how some of these people even get in, maybe by connections or what, but some of them not only behave as though they are thugs, some of them look like thugs.

There are more and more medical schools mushrooming all over the world, and standard is bound to go down as I also do not know why suddenly, so many ppl are pursuing medicine. I foresee in a few years, there will be an oversupply of docs all over the world.

I know of this doc, who graduated from one of the med schools in India (not that I'm saying that med schools in India are bad, they are pretty good), but this doc, who's been practicing for ages, was a former Arts student, and not only that, he was unsure of the normal body temperature. 👎

Well, what do we have here...a machine gunner?...Jesus H. Christ...I've got a hard-on! Sup moto? If you went to boot camp in Hollywood then it was easier for you

Think about it Buck...if they are letting in former Marines...then you know its just getting easier every year. Marines are to be trusted with M16's and hand grenades only...not your Aunt or Uncle. 😱

There goes the neighborhood.

It's you. Your stoner friends in those lower tiered allopathic schools are more intelligent than you. They can smoke weed and party and still get into medical school. Imagine if they studied as much as you, they would be at Harvard or Hopkins by now.

The average entry stats has increased every year so it's tougher to get into medical school every year.

You are not a slacker. You are a closet gunner that's trying to appear like a genius. You study your a$$ off but you try to make it seem like you slack off. . Typical

I haven't really seen too many stupid people in my class--in fact, I haven't seen any.

What I have seen is arrogant jerks who think they are smarter than the rest of the class.

guy walks into a bar and takes a look around, then proclaims, "hey, is it just me or are lot of you guys low-life redneck losers?"

know your audience

And speaking of slacking, few things are less productive than standing around criticizing the aptitude of others. Whether you are right or wrong about them, ultimately you only paint yourself in a bad light. Either you are jealous and bitter, or you are pompous & self-righteous with nothing better to do than sit in judgement.

The reality is your so-called "slacker" friends did make it & so the opportunity is now theirs to seize or squander.

that's BS and you know it
school's have different curriculums, different research strengths, vastly different clinical sites and departments

nope its not BS....every school has been accredited the same way...yes there may be some variations, but any medical school is a good school. They will teach you all the same things that you need to know, thats y they are accredited.

yes they all meet a minimum set of requirements....but all schools are not created equal

My thought exactly! Two of my interviewers recently (both ex-Army) laughed and said (somewhat jokingly) that one didn't see too many Jarheads applying for med school. "Try not to bark at your patients, k??"

Of course, I am (as are most well-trained Marines) an expert in the long-range kill. Forget being a "gunner." :meanie:

Oh, and by the by: I'm a Hollywood Marine and damn proud of it! You can have your sand fleas. I'll take Mount Motherfocker and The Grim Reaper over "no-seeums" any day. :horns:

Yea, I did Mt. MF and the Reaper...along with Iron Mike and the Microwave. Camp horno 2/1...I hated every second of it 🙂

Dude, sandfleas suck so bad you don't even know!

I love it...we need to form a marine/physician coalition and get together every Nov. 10th to celebrate.

Stay motivated Marines! 😎

Word. PM me folks and we can start a little email group or something.

Whatcha doing for the Birthday this year???

Oh, and random rant:
[rant]

It really chaps my ass when a newspaper or magazine fails to capitalize "Marine" when talking about a member of the Corps. It's NOT "marine" you tools. 😡

Just curious, but what does being a former Arts student have to do with being a good doctor...there are plently of Arts students who go to medical school and are great doctors...if not better than their science counterparts for their broader life knowledge. (Though this is an English Lit. major/Anthro minor speaking, so what the heck do I know 🙂)
Also, perhaps he was unsure of normal body temperature because he was not familiar with Fahrenheight degrees, seeing that the rest of the normal world uses Celcius...just a thought.

What a jerk thing to say Buck!
I think you are trolling....and you have an ego problem.

I'd like to say that as for being unsure of "normal" body temperature, it depends on the individual physiology of the patient.

Sure, everybody thinks 98.6 degrees F or 37 C, but I've seen people with "normal" temperatures as low as 95 F, and as high as 100.

As a n00b, I have no idea what the clinical definition of a fever is, but with medicine, as in all subjects, the idea of what is normal gets more and more complex with the more you know about the subject.

As any 5 year old what 2+2 is, and they'll tell you 4.

Ask a Ph.D. in Mathematics what 2+2 is, and you've barely begun to define what you are asking them to solve. What base is it? Are they large values of 2? ect...

is it me or are you an idiot?

buck strong-- people take many different roads to get to medical school and the basic requirements always have to be met. my guess is that if you continue life with an elitist opinion about the certain type of student that should be in med school, you're going to miss out on meeting a lot of well-rounded, talented people along the way.

The only "dumb" people I've seen at my school are about 5 idiots in my biochem class that actually had the gall to email the professor two days before our first exam to try and have it delayed.

Not dumb for wanting more time, just dumb for asking. Especially dumb for thinking there was a chance.

Gatsbyjo-

Do you go to school in the Southeast?

Was your school ravaged by hurrican Ivan?

That's the only reason I can think of that a professor would postpone a test.

Buck Strong said:
sorry for the general statement... However, I will stand by my statement that there are alot of people in medicine who shouldn't be in it. But then again, that's what certain fields are for. I just won't name them specifically, because i'm sure someone will be offended, draw your own conclusions.

Buck Strong, exactly why_did_you decide to become a doctor? So you feel that "certain fields" are reserved for those lesser (in whatever parameter you decide to define for the moment) than you?

Just think about what you are really saying to the world in this forum a little bit more.

-D

Gerg-
no sign of Ivan here in the midwest...

However lots of signs of idiots in my biochem.

my favorite part was that our prof actually had let the class have a discussion about whether to change the test, and he said he would "ask the administration"

this is especially funny to me because they never were actually considering, yet my nutty classmates were checking all day to see if we would get the weekend to study.

how dumb do you have to be to fall for that one? "we may change the test"
hahaha

Thank you, Captain Obvious. A leprachaun will also be bringing pots of gold to all of you MS1's after the postponed test. Everyone will also get A's.

I don't think there are any stupid people here. Lacking in common sense, or having any of number of other issues, yes. But actual stupidity has been pretty well weeded out by this point.

Is it just me or does the "Semper Fi" subthread here crack anyone else up? 😀

Unfortunately, I've seen a few "float through the system". It amazes me that these people can slack off that much (at the cost of their classmates on the same rotation) and still manage their way through 3rd year. They're not dumb...they must be freakin' rocket scientists. Its the only way I know how to explain the fact that they're still here.

Not just you my friend...it cracks me up too.

Like when Evo got on his soapbox about the lack of capital "M" in Marine -- how it really chaps his ass! That's good stuff.

You shouldn't worry about the bottom of your class but whether you can be part of the top.
