I'm not really thinking of studying for step 1 yet, but just to see what the fuss was about I downloaded bros anki deck and looked through the systems we've covered. I basically couldn't answer anything. I mean, I'd know about 1 in 20 cards, if that, despite having done very well on exams. I know I get most of step 1 in M2, but people always talk about using FA or bros deck in conjunction with M1 classes. You'd think I'd learn something.

Is my school particularly low yield for step 1 in the first year, or is this the typical experience, where M1 is basically just background info with little/no relevance to step 1?
