is it normally considered bad to ask interviewers about their medical background ?

and what drew them to the medical school? I had one interviewer who wouldnt answer it because he considered it to be off-topic, then again this dude told me he came to the school because the program he was in required him to teach and he was the dean of something important (****ing wow). I found that pretty weird because every other person I asked in interviews was super happy to answer. is it normally a problem? im trying to figure out what the interviewer's problem was.

No, this isn't considered bad at all. It's a fairly standard question for an interviewee to ask an interviewer IMO, and I am surprised that your interviewer would react that way.
