So I applied early, and was complete in most of my schools by mid July. However, I heard nothing from any of them. My MCAT is 27 with a 3.5 GPA. I realize that my chances are very slim, but this waiting is killing me and I want to know now whether I should withdraw and start studying for the MCAT or stay positive and wait. Should I call schools and ask about my chances, or it would look too desperate?

I don't think it would do you any good to call and ask about chances. More than likely, you wouldn't be able to get the information you wanted anyhow.

Realize that with your statistics, you'll likely be waiting a while. You have a chance, but the first rounds of interviews usually go to the top applicants. If I were in your position, I would go about life with the assumption that you _won't_ get in this time around, and plan accordingly. If you get an offer, it will be a pleasant surprise.

Agreed. It's not so much that it would annoy them but they really have no way of knowing. If they haven't rejected you yet then they are most likely looking to compare you to the rest of the applicant pool. Bearing in mind they are nowhere near done sorting through the rest of the applications (some people- like me- have only recently completed at many schools), this could take awhile.

Good luck and hang in there!!!

They're pretty much going to tell you to wait and see. You could call if you want, but it might be useless, IMO.

They won't tell you anything. If they would tell those kinds of things over the phone, everyone would be calling asking, and then they wouldn't get any work done.

Honestly, you should just hope for the best but plan for the worst and start getting ready to re-take the MCAT. The best-laid backup plans are often the ones that are unneeded--I had a friend who actually was called last June to find out they were getting into a school off the waitlist in the middle of his MCAT retake 😀

You're going to sounds like an impatient little kid. Would you call a job that you're applying to to ask, "Hey was are my chances of getting this job?" Do you really think that they will pull up your application and compare you to everyone else right there on the spot and give you some percent?

I know I have to wait, but checking my email every hour and reading SDN makes me super neurotic. why does it have to be so hard?

You should think about taking a break from SDN. Seriously, it sounds like you need one. We all do sometimes.

To answer your question, I am going to assume that you have verified that you are complete at all of your schools. In that case, no, it would not be appropriate to call the schools to ask about your chances. As long as your file is open (meaning you have submitted your app and no decision has been made), they will not discuss specifics about it with you. As others have already pointed out, it's also not necessarily a bad thing to have heard nothing yet. Consider that it's very easy to have selective reading on SDN, meaning that you focus on the posts about interviews and kind of forget about all of the posts by people who got rejected by those very same schools that haven't rejected you. As long as you haven't been rejected, you are still in the running. Best of luck; hope you hear back soon. 🙂

wait, so he had his cell phone with him while he was taking the MCAT? shouldn't that not be allowed?

Haha no, but he did then proceed to get a 5 on BS when he'd cranked out an 11 and 10 on PS and VR 😀

I noticed he had a voicemail on his phone when he went to get a snack from his locker during his break between VR and WS. He saw it was from an area code with a school he had an open waitlist still at, and so he snuck a listen 🙂 He did not have his phone with him during the test itself.

Here was his post 🙂
