I've attended two conferences offered by dental schools in my area. They were pretty much an informational session, tour of the school, and some other activities/booths for prospective students. Would it be okay to list these on AADSAS?

well... where are you planning to put this information? Cause there is no section for it, the dental experience section is not for this stuff.

I would leave this part out, but you can bring it up in the interview if the right moment comes

Maybe he can list it under "Academic Enrichment."

where is that?

The same place Awards/Honors, Dental Experience, EC/Community Service, Research Experience and Work Experience are: "Professional Experience". Right under the "Education" section and right above the "Personal Statement" section.

ohhhh...since mine is populated, I couldn't see it anymore.

I haven't applied yet, so I don't really know. I have attended an open house at a dental school and I won't be putting that on my application because I plan to also apply at other schools. I don't want the other schools to exclude me because they assume I'd pick the one that I'd already visited. If it was an educational seminar, then maybe I'd include it.

what if I don't have any personal awards, but the student organization that I'm a leader for has won club-awards? Can I list those too?

Do you think it will help?

I think they will help with the two schools that hosted the conferences. They're my number 1 and 2 schools but I don't want to distance myself from the other schools I'm applying so I guess my option is to either to risk slighting the other schools or make me look like a more interested applicant to my #1 and 2...

It's all about phrasing

1) Columbia University Dental Conference: Toured Columbia sim. lab, clinics, and got hands-on activity with some of the Dental Students.

Might alienate potential schools, so lets switch it up a lil. Look at your conference and see whether they go under different aliases that will not alienate yourself.

2) New York/South New York/ NY Dental Conference 2011: Immersed in sim. lab techniques, future clinical studies, and had hand-ons activity with various Dental Students.

Now you can list it under your EC's. Another example: 1) UCSF Dental Conference...No. 2) City of S.F. Dental Conference.

Or you could just make mention of the conferences making an impact on your outlook of dentistry in your personal statement.

I thought about this but don't you think it might be a little too explicit?

By that I mean...don't you think that putting it in the personal statement would sound a little too much like name dropping?

The personal statement seems a lot more important that 1 addition to the "Academic Enrichment" activities and I don't want other non-mentioned dental schools to think that I'm pandering.

Thanks, I'm kind of leaning toward this strategy (#2).

I'm sure people will have varying views on this, but I don't think it's necessarily name dropping. The conferences were held where they were held; you can't help that. I am really no one, but if I were an adcom I wouldn't even think twice at the mention of where a conference was held.

Another option is to put that you went to 2 conferences and leave out the places they were held. I still don't think it matters much though. I doubt going to a conference will make a difference to many. Having it make an impact on you, though, can make a difference.

how about CE credits?

ive got a lot of credits from various courses throughout the years.

would that count towards "dental experience"? (id say half were dental related and other half were "motivational for the staff" type of stuff)
