Other Is it possible for an already attending in their country IMGs to get a gastro fellowship without going through 3 years of IM residency?

Hello everyone,
I'm a gastroenterology attending in my country and thinking about moving to the US.
Are there any routes for IMGs who are already specialists in their countries other than re-doing the IM residency then looking for a gastro fellowship.
I heard about doing a preliminary internship and then applying for a fellowship (after securing the steps of course).
Thanks.

If you don’t want to practice in the US, then it is fine. But if you want to have to complete IM residency training before or after your GI fellowship

So it's better to do an IM residency, make my application for a fellowship stronger then apply for the fellowship if i want to stay and practice there? Also, how long does it take in general to prepare and pass the 3 steps? Thanks :)

Hey, I had the same question as Myriam.

Was wondering, how do we find the spots? I am asking because nearly everywhere (ie every website I have searched) you find that a prior IM residency is a requirement.

Yes unfortunately for us even if we have finished IM residency outside the country you have to complete it to practice. You can do fellowship if you have done the IM residency outside, still mandatory to do a US residency to practice. It takes around a year :) step 1 6 months, step 2 ck and cs 6 - 8 months. And if time do step 3. Yes that’s a great idea. Get good scores do a fellowship and if want to practice residency :) need anything let me know

You do need a IM residency either here or or your home country to do a fellowship. That is true

GI is the most competitive IM fellowship...it’s hard for FMGs to get it with an IM fellowship, much less without one... and really not going to matter that one is already a GI attending.
