Is it possible that in the future, med students will have to pay for residency?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Really? I've been told that there are more slots then there are applicants! I'm glad I had that qualifier before hand.

There are more spots than US students (MD and DO), but throw in the IMGs and FMGs and applicants outstrip spots by a decent margin

I am worried that we are at a tipping point between number of qualified bodies and residency slots. If so, this does not bode well for the upcoming medical school classes. My notion is that most at risk are students with red flags like Boards failures, or those who had to a repeat a year.

Even so, 1,000 or so US grads dont match and get slots via SOAP program

Unmatched Applicants

Applicants who did not match to a residency position participated in the NRMP Match Week Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program® (SOAP®) to attempt to obtain an unfilled position. This year, 1,177 of the 1,279 unfilled positions were offered during SOAP. SOAP results will be available in the full Match report published in May.

I don't even want to think about it.
