Is it possible to create an externship?

Hi everyone!

I've been thinking (waaaaay ahead) to fourth year, and I'm wondering if it's possible to create an externship at a clinic or institution that doesn't have an existing externship program. Does anyone have experience with this?

In particular, I'm thinking about a clinic that was just started by a vet I know - it's a really interesting practice, and I'm hoping to shadow there whenever I have time during school. I'd really love to extern there during fourth year, but so far as I know she has no plans to create formal externship program.

Davis must approve externships for them to count towards your fourth year - but assuming this vet says yes and Davis approves, then it should be fine. I'm not small animal track so I'm not sure how lenient or tough the approval process is. There is a formal application process, but it seems relatively straightforward. There is a two week requirement for an externship to count (i.e., you can't just do a week long externship). I'm Zoo Track but wanted to spend a week at a Small Animal practice and am getting around the approval rules by doing it during my vacation time, which is always an option. I won't get any school credit and it's a bummer that my vacation will be packed with an externship, but that's how I'm getting around the rules. You might want to get targeted info from other Davis students since this information could vary at other institutions.

I "made up" quite a few of mine. I just had to fill out slightly more paperwork than for the established ones I did.

At least here at MN it's very, very common. It's easy to get added into our rotation-scheduling system.

Pretty common here at UTK as well. You just have to fill out more paperwork and get it approved 2 months ahead of time if it's not an externship on the already established list.
