is it possible to go to medical school after dental school and practice both?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You can do an OMFS residency after dental school and earn an M.D. But pursuing dentistry and OB/GYN? That's kind of absurd.

The thing is i love dentistry but i admire OB/GYN. is there any way one can practice both
Case Western Reserve U just introduced a DDS/MD program. Contact them for more info.

A single office with both family practice and general dentistry would be the best way to go. One stop shop for all your healthcare needs.

well we have a Pham D about to graduate with a DMD and he moonlights as a pharmacist for some cash flow. i'm sure you could have a similar set up if you wanted.

ie: go to dental school, get out enroll in med school, and work as dentist while in med school (you're done with class by 12 everyday anyway your first 2 yrs - a lot of them ok - put the flame throwers down), and then live off of 5 hrs of sleep and finish your residency, then work part time as both. who cares that you'd be paying 40x the malpractice insurance being a OB/GYN than being a dentist and the truck load of loans you'll be paying back - unless you really DO have a rich uncle 🙂

I believe there is a 4 year OMFS and a 6 year OMFS program. The 6 year OMFS program will land you a MD degree and will allow you to practice medicine.

Just having MD doesn't mean you'll be practicing medicine. It just shows you that you have received education in medicine to achieve MD (2 years of med schools during ur OMFS) but it doesnt mean you can start doing OB/GYN or anything unlike dentistry where DDS/DMD will allow one to practice in all parts of denstry as long as one is confident in its capability

Say he gets omfs and md, can he just get a license to practice med? Is it possible to practice dentistry 3 days a week and med 3 days a week?

No, after you get your MD you'll then have to compete some sort of residency program. In this case a 4 yr OB/GYN program during which you will not have time for much outside of work and even then I'm not sure of what programs would think of an applicant who is also planning on practicing dentistry. Would certianly be a very unique situation.

Besides, OB doesn't really lend itself being a part time career, financially I just don't see how it would be worth it when you could do just as well or probably better building your own dentistry practice. On my OB rotation I had several attendings tell me they just gave up OB because it was just costing them too much (financially and time wise) and now just do GYN surgeries.
