Hello everyone,

Yes, no one wants to see you taking a class 3 or more times.

@swollcat ....Retaking a third time is pushing it. However, in that case you should, but you don't want that to happen again.

Failing calculus and not retaking it is kind of a red flag, isn't it? It's also a red flag to me that you don't think you could do better than a D in calc right now.

Hugely both scenarios.

You need to retake and you need to get at least a B.

My apologies if I seem indifferent or insecure. I failed that course 8 years ago and foolishly did not retake it. Furthermore I have not taken a single math class let alone calc in that time. My concerns are very real... Is it recommended that I try to self teach myself the basics OR should I start the math series over starting with trig? Thank u

Retake calc and chem 1 get A's. I'd be concerned about your ability to handle med school if you can't do that.

I remember some ADCOM DO members frequently say that they have had students retake a single class 3 times to finally end up with a B or A in the class. I would think Adcoms would be a little weary of people taking more than three times to retake a class. I can understand retaking a C and then getting an A and thats the end of the discussion, but I would think that people who need to retake a class more than twice should seriously reconsider study habits.

I absolutely concur. Please dont get me wrong - i did not take chem the first time score a D and then let several years pass and then RETAKE to get a C. I took the course the first time at the very young age of 18 and then immediately retook, but immaturely just enough to skate by with a C. I have allowed a tremendous amount of time to pass as a means of distancing myself from these putrid scores. I am adamant about retaking Chem a third time because i am supremely confident I will receive an A. Calc on the other hand is giving me nightmares, because I dont remember trig (specifically identities) or the basic tenants of calculus

I actually took AP calc in HS and passed, the calc that I need to retake is technically calc II (quarter system, so Calc I/II semester sys). my apologies, hopefully this will clarify my reluctance

If that is the case, it seems to me that you need to knock it out of the park the next time you take it.

I Heart grade replacement and it is really the only reason I can see myself as a doctor. I am in the process of GPA repair after being a STUPIDLY STUPID student with abhorrent study skills who thought med school would just happen through osmosis. Since this path of recovering my GPA, it is going ten times better than even a year ago when I had this immature attitude.

Don't take grade replacement for granted and don't be afraid to use it if you will do better! Really learn why you failed the first time and fix the mistake It is an amazing thing and has really turned the beat around for many member's applications, where if it didn't exist all the passionate people who messed up in early years would have been turned away or had to gamble on the Caribbean schools.

Show them that both grades were a mistake by getting an A on this third try and invoking the blessing of grade replacement and I think that the ADCOMs will be understanding. Then knock the MCAT out of the park.

If you keep getting grades < B level, then yes, it sends a serious negative signal. Do not retake non-preq courses. You can eat a C in Calculus. Chem? maybe. What's your sGPA like?

Hello everyone, I have a quick question about retakes that I will try to make as concise as possible.

While I thoroughly understand that retakes should be comprised of courses with a less than a B grade and upper divisions, would it be wise to:

-retake C grade non-science courses?
-retake a pre-requisite a 3 rd time? (Received a D in Chem 1 the first time and a C the second time)

-Not retake a non-science F grade out of fear of receiving a comparable grade? (GPA: 3.3. Worried that if I retake Calculus I I might get a D, which would only serve to further damage my non-AACOMAS GPA)

Thank you GORO! My science GPA is much better at 3.5. the only reason why im debating retaking 2 non-preq courses is because they would put me over a 3.4 which I hear is actually a huge jump from a 3.3

Is it ok to retake non-prereqs if it will boost GPA for DO? I have a few non-prereqs to retake so I can raise my GPA. I have made great grades in my prereqs, but I stumbled in college (at first) and didn't do so well in general education courses. Should I ignore the non-prereqs and bank on my sGPA "making up" for the lower cGPA?

I'd stick with the scicne coursework. We're not going to really care that you got a C in French or Economics.

Definitely retake it a third time. Otherwise, I'd wonder if it would take you 5 times to get a decent grade.
